Big fan of this forum and deeply value all the insights and opinions I find here when it comes to my L300.
Today I'm posting on a separate topic. The wife and I had our first real baby (my second after the Delica ) and she wants to upgrade from her little whip, a 2008 Honda Civic to a family SUV.
She really likes the VW Tiguan, but I know her preference is based mostly on the aesthetic (not a good enough reason for me), and the spaciousness (that's a little better of a reason for me, though I'm sure other spacious options exist).
Personally I don't have a strong preference one way or the other. The van is my vehicle that I love for it's look, function, and pleasure of maintaining, so I'm open to whatever suits us best as a family rig.
My requirements are more so that it's reasonable to work on myself like I always have with my own vehicles for the past 20 years of my driving life and cars that are circa 2001 and older (and hopefully can have 4x4 option, but it's not a deal breaker either way).
Having never owned a newer car than my wife's 2008 Honda Civic, I have this (perhaps irrational) fear that the more recently manufactured cars are much more difficult for the backyard mechanic to maintain.
I just want to be able to handle the simple stuff like all the various oil changes, brake replacements, filter swaps, and the standard stuff like that. I would hate to have a car where I need to bring it in for basic maintenence just because the design is overly complex or specialty tools are required.
So my question is, if you were in my position what kind of SUV would you have your eye on ? For financial reference, the Tiguan is on the pricier side of my budget, but could justify a well maintain used one I guess.
