The next Delicas Northwest meet up is scheduled for June 23-24. We're going camping! This post is the primary location for information, so please read and let me know if you can make it, have questions, or anything else.

The basics:

Who: All are welcome! This trip is in-range for Oregon and Washington Delica'ers. Delica, VW, Toyota, motorcycle, Abrams M1 - if it drives, it's welcome!
What: Camping/exploring.
When: June 23-24.
Where: Meeting at The Mountain Goat (coffee shop) in Packwood, WA, at 12pm. We'll hang there until 12:30pm and then head up into Gifford Pinchot. Our destination is Horshoe Lake Campground.
Why: Because the F*%^&* snow is melting, we can do cool shit again, and I didn't buy a Delica to haul groceries from Fred Meyer.

Full info:

So, short story long, we're going to meet up at The Mountain Goat in Packwood at 12pm on Saturday, June 23. Packwood is easy to find - US12 runs directly through it. Diesel is available in both Randle and Packwood. A few people I know are planning on getting to the area Friday night. The best place to camp if you're interested in doing the same is probably La Wis Wis Campground, a bit east of Packwood on US12. This campground requires reservations. If you can't get a spot, there's plenty of opportunity for dispersed camping in the area.

Saturday afternoon, we'll leave The Mountain Goat at 12:30pm to head into the forest toward Horseshoe Lake Campground. If you don't make it in time or want to meet us in the forest, that's fine. But be sure to research routes and road closures. They're frequent this time of year. Useful maps with probable route below. There's 12 spots at this campground. They are first come, first served; not reservable. If we run out of space at Horseshoe, there are other options nearby to act as alternatives for some folks:

Takhlakh Lake - spots are walk-in and reservable.
Kileen Creek - spots are first come, first served.
Ollalie Lake - spots are first come, first served.
Keenes Horse Camp - spots are reservable, but I generally try to avoid these camps.
Dispersed camping - hyperlinked document gives you guidelines for doing so.
Adams Fork - a ways back toward Packwood, but still a nice place to stay.

Rough route map (there's a few ways to get there, but this is a direct illustration)

Delicas Northwest is planning and arranging this, but very informally. We're not Descend on Bend. There aren't tickets or membership, or anything like that. Accordingly, we don't have food, drink, etc., to provide for everyone. Hey, maybe someday? This is essentially just a bunch of people who were foolish enough to buy nearly 30 year old diesel vans from Japan going camping together. Please do your own research/preparation regarding these campgrounds. Most offer limited services and have no camp host on site, so prepare accordingly. They are all managed by Hoodoo Rec Services, but it's just one (or two) dude(s) who drives around to all of them, I believe.

Horseshoe Lake is about 2 hours driving from Packwood. The road isn't paved for 90% of the trip. It starts off with washboarded gravel roads and becomes a bit more rugged/dirt as you get farther in the forest. It's nothing crazy, but as this is early in the season, rough road conditions, downed trees and other obstacles may present themselves.

Essentials to bring:

Bring cash to pay for your site if you're staying at one. $12-18 depending on location. (Exact change recommended)
Bring a NW Forest Pass. $30
Bring firewood (purchaseable in Randle, Packwood, or Adams Fork, if the host is at his site).
Bring food, drink and whatever else you need.
Bring a full tank of fuel, and extra if you can.
Bring appropriate tools, spares and equipment. It's a long road back to civilization ; ) Ask me how I know.

Ok - surely I'm forgetting something, so: comment or message with questions on here; or DM me at @delicasnorthwest on Instagram. For day-of contact, my cell is 253-459-3532.

Hello!
First post here, I was following this on IG, and wondering how the camping was? I've been itching to get way out there in our Delica.

Thanks for posting!

Camping was great; found a few fun stretches of road on our way out of the forest, too.

Speaking of, we should really get another meetup in before summer is over.

Yeah, tell me about it. I've been out of commission for the last couple weeks, but we're looking at getting something going soon. Will post some details.
