First legit mountain pass trip w/ my Deli

I finally took my 91 Delica on a trip over the big mountain passes here on the way to my place in Keystone, Colorado. On the way out, I did a bunch of back roads then I went on I70 thru Eisenhower Tunnel (11,158 feet). The I70 bit was pretty stressful. Dropped below 40 mph for a few sections, trying to keep the EGT in the acceptable range. People were lining up behind me or passing at 75 mph. Not a ton of fun, but I went late at night so I wasn't too much of a hindrance.

The low headlights are horrendous, which added to the stress on the back roads. The highs are decent, but too bright for oncoming traffic. So, windy twisty roads are a pita...

On the return, I went over Loveland Pass (11,990 feet). The Deli handled that fine, as everyone goes slowly up and over that pass due to the scenery and twisty roads. The rest of the way, I just patiently puttered along at 60-67 mph. The turbo was tuned to push 13psi (and occasionally 14), so she'll go faster, but I generally keep things in the 60-67 mph range so I don't have to worry about bumping up the EGT's on slight rises.

The van was fun to drive while up in Keystone. Does fine on gravel, town roads, etc. Tons of space for hauling my bikes, standup paddleboard, chairs that I was taking to my condo, etc.

Are you running rhd headlights?

Those are some really gorgeous pictures.

Is your van an automatic?

Not sure on headlights. The van was originally imported to Canada, then eventually the USA. I would expect they were required to be converted to LHD. Regardless, it seems to be more of an issue of the intensity, not the alignment. It is like driving with a couple candles on my bumper.

The van is a 5 speed.

I haven’t really been in a super dark area…I live in the city…I wonder if you used fogs too if that would have helped..

5 speed…yummy :) ..I bet that helped a ton coming down

Those Hella driving lights really really help, but again people flash me when I use them. I might be able to align them better and get away with using them, not sure. I'd be interested in some type of conversion housing if they exist and are semi-affordable.

The manual is great for going down mountain passes without touching the brakes. In Colorado, it is easy to pick out the tourists as they tend to ride their brakes downhill the whole way (rather than downshifting).

A number of members here have installed them and I personally have found they offer generous lighting on both low and high beam.
 
that pass through eisenhower IS stressful in a delica... glad you made it without issue. we did that back in February after spending a month in Silverthorne. If you haven't already, you could try upgrading the bulbs in the headlights and then check the beam alignment. We've got some dark roads around here and its made a bit of a difference for my night-driving.... but I mostly still need to rely on the high beams.

I've run across those while searching, but wasn't sure if they'd work. I'll read the thread thoroughly and hopefully do it...
