Help with VIN of L300

The third model was made from '1986-2013. It went through several facelifts and minor changes over the years; and I thought the single square headlights were only on the very early ones (~86-88). Note that Terence's L300 is a '2000, I would expect this one to look more like his if it were a later make... but there was a whole lot of variability depending on which factory made it and which country it was intended for.
It was the L300 wagon models that adopted the profile 4-bulb type headlamps in 1990; the ambulance, 12-seat minibus and van models continued with the single rectangular headlamps. Then from 1999 to 2004, the models either adopted the 2-bulb type headlamps or were discontinued.

Well i got the van, the VIN on the chassis plate matches the V5 document so the year is a 'Y' does that really mean it was built in 2000 for european export? it has no air bags and has the old square headlights etc

Older models were made for various markets (see: indonesia). I suspect facelift changes might have required re-certification in some markets, and it was easier to just make the older/pre-facelift model. Or maybe it was just cheaper overall, allowing them to sell a van for a bargain price on the domestic market.

Strange to me that this happened in the UK. But when I thought about it over the week. Mitsubishi never offered the panel van variant with the newer front end in UK (we didn't get the exceed I don't think) and in 2000 when the space gear/mk4 was being sold, they didn't have a panel van offering of this model right?

Leaving only the shape and styling of my van to cover the panel van base? It's weird because it looks and feels like a late 80s van, yet isn't! Good for me though as it has 60k miles and no rot

The 10th digit of the VIN represents the vehicle model year and not necessarily the vehicle production year. This standard is adopted by most car manufacturers around the world. You can search online to see what year each character represents.

With the Japanese-built Mitsubishi L300, the first MY00 vehicle was built in 9/1999 and was issued with VIN: JMFSRP03WYA000001
