Insurance asked for "Import Certificate" before they would insure it?

Has anyone else run in to this issue? I'm in GA and when I called Allstate my agent said that they wouldn't insure my 1993 L300 without an import certificate showing it had been "converted for us roads". The agent mentioned the DOT? He suggested I go with Haggerty insurance (which i probably will) but this struck me as odd... Wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them in GA?

I had to get my insurer an "export certificate" from japan. It was an odd sized piece of paper (not 8.5x11) and was all in japanese. Included with it was a translated copy and also in addition, a certificate of translation. I went with american collectors. When i went to the dmv to get my plates, they would up keeping this doc in their file.

That's what I thought they were asking for, but apparently not?

An import certificate is for a vehicle imported under bond and modified to meet DOT/federal requirements... they're basically talking about importing w/o the 25yr exceptions.

I tried telling the agent it was over 25 years old and he just didn’t listen to me I guess. ‍♀️
Or they don't care... some states are not allowing vehicles on the road that only qualify for import due to the 25yr exceptions. It's not terribly surprising that some insurance companies won't ensure them either (at least not fully).

Could be. But irksome since my house is insured with them too.
