Insurance in BC?

Hi all,

I’m a thinking of getting a delica for camping and surf trips, and looking for some advice with some of the costs insurance and registration costs I can expect. I have a vehicle already, so would insure a second vehicle, so would maybe insure it for half the year. But just not sure if the import/ right hand drive will affect the insurance rates?

I haven’t dealt with ICBC before, so any information for your experiences would be appreciated!

Also another question is if it’s hard to get replacement parts for these? Are There some parts that make sense to have a spare on hand due to shipping/ availability?

thanks in advance :)

Hi Brado. I'm in Langley, BC. I pay just over $2K a year for my 89 Delica. That said, I have many years of no accidents but I am also heavily insured ($5M liabilty option, etc) so +/-. There is no extra charge for the RHD. As for parts, it isn't hard to find compatable stuff like brakes, oil filters, shocks, etc. There are also a few shops around town that carry parts. Delicas are expensive to fix if you're unable to do any if the work yourself. But not much has gone wrong on my delica over the past 13 years. Most expensive was having the turbo rebuilt. Buy one, they're awesome.

Hi Brado, I get my car insurance from this online insurance brokerage website https://www.surex.com/Insurance/auto-car/calgary for my car. I'm afraid I couldn't give you an estimate as to how much it would cost you to insure your Delica as it would depend on a lot of factors like your driving history, insurance claim record, your age, your location, as well as your specific car make and model. You can get a free no-obligation quote from that website I mentioned though by simply entering the required information, through that you'll be able to get accurate quotes from several auto insurance companies. Hope this helps!

I own a 2002 L400 in Vancouver. Insurance through ICBC was about $1200 for the year. I have an impeccable driving record. No extra charges for the right hand drive.

With the new setup ICBC is using the rate is going to very from person to person. being RHD doesnt seem to make it any more less expensive.

The vehicles are certainly old enough to qualify for them, but they need to be pefectly stock. In my case, I'd have to find and reinstall the old radio, remove the tint from the windows (1989s didn't come with tint), reinstall rear seating, fix all the rust, etc. Plus off roading would be a no-no. The point of collector plates (and the low insurance costs) is that ICBC expects you will be very careful with the vehicle. Treat it like a show car. Too many restrictions for me.
