Interest In Safari Starion Build?

The title kind of says it all but to be a bit more verbose I'm about to start a second Starion project and the goal for the car is to build something akin to what Mitsubishi would have submitted for homologation of the Group B rally car. Not a flat out race car, not a mild mannered car, something in the middle.

The basics are a rust free white widebody shell will a good interior, an engine / trans sourced from a friend, lots of fabrication, weight reduction, simplification, and a microsquirt standalone ecu to run everything.

It won't make a million horse power but it will be light, rugged, capable, and have all the equipment you think about when you envision rally/safari cars.

So what do you think? I'll already be documenting it for another forum, so if there is interest it will be easy to post here too.

Have a good one,

Allen

I have been contemplating a doch swap for my 4g64 but I have absolutely no idea what I am doing so would love to watch someone live the dream and follow in footsteps...

Do you mean swap the 4g64 engine out of your Delica for something else? Any thoughts as to what?

No I am trying to figure out if I can use the 4g64 as a base and bolt on a Dohc 4g63 head and possibly a turbo. Seems to be a somewhat common build in the DSM world but am yet to find someone do it in a Deli

You definitely can, the engine is the same. You will however need to either pay someone quite a bit to do it or have a fairly solid knowledge of engine building, fabrication, wiring, etc.

I've been researching to do the same thing. It is doable, there are just a few unknowns like intake manifold/throttle body placement, plumbing to back of head, etc will be different since all of the info I have is for the Might Max/Dodge Ram50, which seems to have less room between the head and firewall and less vertical room. Other than that, there still seems to be some debate whether new pistons are necessary. They might not be if you aren't planning on using a turbo. With turbo, probably will need pistons since the compression ratio will be pretty high and there is a question of valve clearance. Luckily there are a few different pistons just for 4G63 heads on 4G64 blocks to dial in your compression ratio. I was planning on starting with just the DOHC and ECU swap from a 2G DSM and adding the turbo and new pistons later if tuning the naturally aspirated engine doesn't get me the power I want.

I used to road race first gen Toyota Mr2 and your project reminds me of the 555d group b rally car. Slight different from yours, but I have always liked starions and hope to see your progress and ideas on build. Good luck!

I hope to one day buy an AW11 for a project car and I'm quite aware 555d car! That thing is so very cool! Maybe I should start with a thread about my other Starion first. That car has Group B and Group A aspects too.

I just went and tried to look up "555d" on youtube to scratch that rally car itch and quickly realized we mis-remembered the numbers haha! Its actually "222d".

Oh yeah, hahahaha I guess I’m dyslexic. Either way very cool car! I had the 350whp mk1.5. (3sgte swap)

I think a safari Starion would be awesome. Also, are you the speedyquest from the StarQuest forum? I remember looking at some of your projects when I was learning as much as I could about the Sirius engines.

Yessir I am. I've started to slowly post my race car build thread here for a few reasons and soon I guess I'll post the Safari Starion build here too.
