Purchasing a new engine

Has anyone had to purchase a new engine? If so, can you share where you got it from? Delica USA was mentioned but I didn’t know if there were better options. We’re in Seattle. Our 89 starwagon has found itself in the shop at Apex in Burien, Wa. I’m not anywhere near the mechanically minded but its safe to say something with the heart of the engine or head has blown. We are in the decision process of investigating the depth of damage. Best case scenario it’s just the head but if it’s the lower part of the engine it will be best to purchase a whole new engine as opposed to piecing it all together.
I’m thinking we’ll replace the radiator at this time too.
Any advice is appreciative. Thanks!

Honestly, the brand new Hyundai direct replacement is pretty cheap at around $3,500 delivered. You'll spend half that replacing your head, 1/3rd swapping out a turbo.
Thanks so much for the recommendation! I’ll start researching this option.

OK, I have to ask. For personal edification and/or future reference does anyone know of an US importer/distributor?

Because Grant lives in Canada...
Oh no, it's far worse than that, I live in New Zealand! We've been importing used Japanese Delicas since 1988, they're *everywhere* down here, to the point where they're not really seen as special (though that's changing as they become rarer.)
If it helps, I can claim nationality through marriage: my husband is American, and we're in the US fairly often?

Also, a blown head is not necessarily the end of the block. Even so, start looking for vans that are being parted. Canada has a few.

When you did your swap, did you have to change from oil cooled turbo to coolant cooled? If so, how complicated was running those lines?
The new engine comes complete with the water-cooled turbo already installed, and the water cooling pipes are all supplied on the engine. Just connect the radiator and heater hoses and you're done. (I think I mentioned this somewhere in the writeup, but it's a long thread.)

I think we ALL thought you were Canadian and living in Canada.

Well, consider yourself adopted here. Welcome to America!

Watching this thread evolve into learning where folks are currently living is quite humorous! Got me chuckling!

Well, results are in... A new engine is required. I guess one of the pistons ceased, breaking it's rod which ruined the crankshaft, turbo and an internal bearing. Eizo, the mechanic at Apex (who is awesome for any of you Seattlites Deli owners needing work), said the engine overheated somehow. I'm definitely going to order a new radiator at this time. Our van doesn't have one of those meters that tells what the EGT is. I thought our temp gauge on the dash worked, but maybe it was faulty - on engine start ups it would start at Cold and then rise 1/3 of the way up when the engine was warm. I did notice that the day before my engine went kaplooie (and only that day, never before), the temp gauge needle would rise from 1/3 to 1/2 above Cold during driving, but it never reached the Red zone. I'm pretty cautious when I drive, trying to keep rpms never above 3000 and not going over 100kph on the freeways. I'll update who we end up going with when we purchase our replacement engine. Thanks to all who contributed to our poor Delica issue and provided helpful info. Much appreciated!

Speaking of new radiators, any recommendations? I've heard a few speak of Silk Road Autos in CAN. Yay? Nay?

I wish this was our case. We found out we need to purchase a new engine. We'll salvage as much as we can, we get out van back tomorrow and will start investigating.
