Timing belt identification: pre-04/'93 engine vs post-04/'93

Admin: TL;DR: Deliman9000 is surprised to find a newer engine in his old Delica, identified by the timing belt shape and water-cooled turbo. Posts lightly edited for the FAQ.

I am currently changing the timing belt on my 1989 l300 Delica.

The old balance belt I pulled off is an OEM MD310484, which after some digging revealed itself to be meant for a post 04/93 delica.

The new balance belt I am trying to install is a Gates T092 (MD363481 for pre 04/93 Delica) .
It seems like it doesn't mesh with the balance belt gears at all and I am confused if this is even the correct belt. In addition to this, I tried to reinstall the new Gates belt to see if I could even get it on and it was impossible to get behind the belt tensioner. Seems like in the youtube videos I watched they guys just slipped on brand new belts on with minimal effort.

Anyone got a match for MD363481 because according to mitsubishi EPC that is the correct number for a '89 deli

Thanks all!

In what ways would the teeth on the sprocket differ? Here's what I got for the timing belt sprocket and balance belt sprocket.

By water-cooled do you mean the switch to engines running water-cooled turbos? Are those the coolant lines running off the turbo on the side? I am only familiar with the oil-cooled turbos as that's what I have on my other delica, but the corrosion on the line makes me think those are coolant lines...

Early model sprocket and belt matching (Note square base between sprocket teeth and matching squared-off belt)

Late model sprocket and belt matching. Look it up closely. They have different shape. (Note rounded base between sprocket teeth and matching belt teeth)

What you have there is a late model, round tooth sprocket and a water cooled turbo: I'd say you have a later model engine. Win! (Except for the "now I have to buy more new belts" part).
