No you don’t need to drain it. Just did this a month ago. Jam a big screw driver in the gear and have some one crank on the pulley bolt.

Yep, just jam the starter ring. On a manual it's part of the flywheel, on an auto it's part of the flex plate... otherwise it's the same...
