    Steaming pile of...

Let me throw a wrench into the spokes of that penny-farthing and point out that it's not quite so simple. Yes, increasing driven wheel size reduces engine RPM for a given road speed and gearing, and for straight-line speed that's all there is to it. However, for acceleration and braking, bigger...

    Steaming pile of...

Oh hai. The restoration took 5 months of intermittent work, a total of $1521 in parts and materials, 132 billable hours, and the result is a rusty but mechanically solid vehicle that the owner's been happily using ever since, and other than a couple of continued minor oil leaks (rear main...

    Part Number Thread for L300

My notes say that Delica rear shoes (not pads) MB500822 or MB587658 are unique to the Delica, and that each of those numbers is for a full axle set of four. If memory serves (I didn't write this down exactly), they are specifically unique to the adjuster contraption MB500830, and the backing...

    Fusible Link Solution

Hm, every fusible link I've replaced (BMW, mostly) has been rated for a current. Another suggestion: circuit breakers. There are quick-blow and slow-blow types. Some are useable for both AC and DC, and some only one or the other. Some reset automatically after some seconds, others manually...

    The Delica as a workhorse

No photos, but two owners ago, my Delica was used as a work vehicle for a satellite installation company. The result was a beat-up interior, and as this was winter in rural BC, serious rust all underneath. The fuel tank, AC, and all fluid lines were destroyed. Pulled the main rear brake pipe...

    Delica L300 5-speed Manual Transmission

How's shift quality with the Penrite? If it replaced another oil, was it stiff at first and improved later?

    Delica L300 5-speed Manual Transmission

Correct, regarding GL5 being incompatible with GL4 for the reasons stated. I'd still refer to GL4 as "regular gear oil", so I thought there was more to the picture than just that designation. However, I suspect there *is* more to it; I changed my gear oil, using StaLube GL4, and shift quality...

    Part Number Thread for L300

Correct operating temperature is a bit unclear, as different sources say different things. I went with the most conservative quoted temperature, 76C, and sourced a thermostat specifically set for that temperature. MD997605 is the OE PN but its temperature is uncertain. Aftermarket options...

What's this about the right oil?

    Mystery wire and always-on headlights

Mine came with an aftermarket DRL relay, which appeared to be inop. Major surgery later, the lights were stuck on, and just as I was beginning to disassemble the dash to start tracing (having found the wiring diagrams confusing and near-useless), I randomly flipped a little light switch to the...

I wonder if US Van, Montero, or MightyMax rear brakes will bolt up? Probably keep the Delica axle housing, axleshafts, and bearing supports, but change the drum backing plate and everything attached to it...? If the backing plate doesn't fit, perhaps the whole axle could be swapped from a Van...

How to R/R rear main seal?

Either the engine or transmission have to come out, as does the clutch/flywheel or flexplate. Not sure about a 4D56 specifically, but many engines have a deep enough crankshaft hub and seal housing bore that the new seal can be positioned 2-3mm off from the old one, sealing on fresh metal...

    New Delica owner Portland

Hello and welcome, fellow Portlander! If your import process was anything like mine, there's not much to tell; mine involved 30 minutes, 25 of which were spent waiting for the border station's computer to restart, and two pieces of paper not including the three $20 bills it cost in import duty.

Hello, new member here, with a l300 double cab

Is that really an L300? I would expect at least the front doors and front face to be the same, but I see no rise in the windowsill, and the rest of the sheetmetal looks different too.

Review: TRD Pro SEMA 17"x7" wheels.

That van's got style! Like 1985 and 2005 had a drunken love child that ended up happy and successful. Not like some others that look like they've been eking out a hardscrabble living between trailer parks and train yards since 1995. Is that all that NZ plates are? Just a plate and the number...

    Wider wheels?

It's true they feel worse than they are, but while they're about as wide as a comparable truck or SUV, they're significantly taller. My solid-axle Toyota is about a foot lower than the L300. There isn't a whole lot of mass up at the roof, compared to the powertrain, but the effects on center of...

Review: TRD Pro SEMA 17"x7" wheels.

106.1-105.7 = 0.4mm. I felt the effects of 0.6mm runout on 17" rims on a BMW, but it took a glass-smooth road, speeds far over what a Delica can do, and paying very close attention specifically for this vibration. I once spent a short afternoon making nothing but phonecalls to wheel repair shops...

    My 89' Delica Chamonix

Regarding a mushy pedal: I replaced all five hydraulic cylinders, all five rubber hoses, and all hard pipes (fabricated from cupronickel) except the short section above the floor... and while it stops on a dime, the pedal is still a sponge. I think it's the nature of the beast.

Hopeful new owner - and a quick question

That's correct - if it's a 3.0, it has the 6G72 V6 gasoline/petrol, which has a timing belt, and in the US is commonly found in Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth vans. The diesel L400 had a 2.8 4M40 with a chain, and was never sold in the US.

Proper shifting in and out of 4 wheel drive on 1990 L300 Super Exceed 2.5 Diesel Automatic?

I stand corrected. MB290822 appears to be a fixed hub, MB569146 is an auto hub, and that's all the EPC shows. Mine came with manual hubs, and most other Japanese 4wd of the era had them as well, so I assumed they were stock. However, mine doesn't appear to have a wheel lock light, either...
