    Chattanooga/Atlanta/Nashville Mechanic

I had a pre-purchase inspection done at Lance's Foreign Auto Repair in Nashville. They recommended Bennet's Automotive for some of the work. They seemed comfortable with Delicas but I decided to do all the work myself so I can't speak for their work.

Where to start to improve mpg

I am running my tires a little higher too (on the highway). Gained ~1mpg. Just trying to squeeze everything I can out of it.

Where to start to improve mpg

I want some advice. I get about 18 city and 20 highway. My to-do list is as follows: Swap to manual hubs (currently fixed) Check alignment Check wheel bearings aren't overtightened Anything else? Check IP timing, etc.? Of these, which would make the most difference?

Water leaking in, pooling around the jack storage

From the leak thread: "Gutters at rear- on the roof at the back are a couple of plastic panels, when re-sealing the gutters dont forget to remove the panels (2 screws, 1 clip) and seal the seams under there. I think this is where water gets into the jack/tool/rear washer reservoir compartments...

What Did You Do for Your Van Today?

Spent the weekend chasing a belt squeal and redoing the valve cover gasket. I really underestimated how precise the gasket and half-moon have to be. After my second try, no more leak! Seam looks a bit "moist" but I am calling it a success. Time to clean up the old sludge!

Oof. I am going to see if there is any play. I hope it's just some loose belts.

    L300 vs l400

I second @DeliKit's response. The L400, from my understanding, is better suited for highway speeds but doesn't share many of its parts with domestic models as the L300 does. I personally enjoy the mechanical aspect of the L300 and wouldn't want the added complications of more electronics.

    Chasing belt squeal

According to the previous owner, they are. MD313660 doesn’t seem to have any clear indicators other than a whiteish strip and the lack of ribs as seen in Grant’s FAQ post. They do seem to have a tad more than 10mm of deflection.

    Chasing belt squeal

Upon purchase, I suffered from what I thought were loose alternator belts. After tightening, the squeal went away only to return in the last few weeks. The squeal only happens on startup and when accelerating. After a few minutes of idling, the squeal is gone. Is this indicative of the...

Seam Job Gone Wrong - Need Advice

I am happy to report that after sealing the gutter seam pictured above, I have successfully eradicated the leak once and for now. Simple polyurethane roofing sealant and we are bone-dry.

    Coolant Conditioner

Had a diesel tech recommend John Deere coolant conditioner (annually) to prevent corrosion, which seems to be a pretty common problem. If I remember correctly, this was one of the things to be wary of before purchase (avoiding rusty coolant color). Is this a good or bad idea? It was news to me.

    Cooling Concerns

Thanks for the quick reply. Coolant level is consistent and my gauge acts almost perfectly as you describe. Definitely reassuring to hear. Next up is a flush and an EGT gauge just for reassurance!
