    A/C relay troubleshooting

Here’s what I found: so if the ignition is on or the engine is on, the main red wire (that taps into the positive terminal of the battery) is carrying voltage between 12-14V, as expected. Whether the ignition or the engine is on, none of the other wires is carrying any voltage at all, even when...

The intrepid cross-country adventures of Arthur Dent

We're doing it again! Another 4K miles, the southerly route this time, mostly Route 66 plus a few other stops (since we started in central Mass). Hoping the rebuilt engine purrs along now, despite asking the van to go back all the way across the country (spent 1K miles testing and breaking in...

    A/C relay troubleshooting

So here we are, heading back another (!!) 4K miles, from east to west this time around. Long story there... and even longer trip, haha! I'll post fun pics elsewhere... we're taking Route 66, and the van has had tons of waves already in its direction :) Unfortunately, the A/C gave out right...

Manufacturing Date - Physically Printed on the Van

When I was tidying up some solar and auxiliary battery wiring last summer, I happened upon the year/month of manufacturing (June 1990 for my Delica Exceed) on one of the original components! Though I guess it’s really the manufacturing date for that particular component, but maybe it’d work for...

    6v or 12 v glow plugs?

Just FYI, I picked up a set of OEM 6V ceramic glow plugs from Amayama, cost me just over $250 for the set of for, including FedEx Shipping (I steered clear of EMS International shipping which would’ve been slightly cheaper, but I’ve read elsewhere on the forum of issues with EMS). I received my...

Vast quantities of blue-gray smoke on startup and uphill in lower gear

I asked them when I went up the next week (after picking it up) to see them again, but they fell back to it being nonessential. Part of the issue seemed to be the length of time it was disassembled there (two months, owing to waiting on the cylinder sleeve part, plus it spanning the winter...

Vast quantities of blue-gray smoke on startup and uphill in lower gear

Here's the area I noticed, where something appeared to be missing (post-rebuild) when I first looked: I went back to my original photos that I took as I was taking things apart to inspect the rockers, and I spotted the missing bracket here:

Vast quantities of blue-gray smoke on startup and uphill in lower gear

Indeed, I feel kind of silly for ever doing what I did before, as the van did start up more smoothly with a consistent holding of the pedal down a bit (not all the way) just after first turning it on, and then pulling the throttle knob out soon after to hold it steady until it was warmer. I do...

Vast quantities of blue-gray smoke on startup and uphill in lower gear

That's interesting to know, thanks for the tip! Definitely something I shall look into. Got it! I think I only do use the pedal just at first to stabilize the idle, but I'll make sure not to think of it like my old Honda with the carburetor now! I assume pumping the pedal once before starting...

Vast quantities of blue-gray smoke on startup and uphill in lower gear

Thanks for clarifying... you're right, that is an old habit from my days with an old Honda with a carburetor. I only do it because it *seems* to help, but I'll try not doing it next time (I'll have that opportunity later today)! And thanks for the reassurance as to it seeming normal, this...

Vast quantities of blue-gray smoke on startup and uphill in lower gear

Good to know! I've hardly experienced cold temps near freezing with my van until after the ring problem & fix, so it's hard to know what's normal.

Vast quantities of blue-gray smoke on startup and uphill in lower gear

Haha, I'm returning to the land of Teslas too with our van (well, hopefully returning, assuming all holds up mechanically for the next ~4K miles)!

Vast quantities of blue-gray smoke on startup and uphill in lower gear

A driving report and a cold-start follow-up question: As I mentioned above, my confidence has been shaken after my ring experience with cylinder 4. Enough to where I went back to NE Auto Imports the week after I got the van back, to ask them to listen to it, and to make sure everything was as...

    Experience Getting New Keys Made?

My 1990 Delica Exceed only came with one very worn key as well. Like others here, I found a matching blank on eBay, then researched locksmiths in the area and took it to the mostly highly reviewed folks (who used two different machines to do it, one for finishing)? New one (pictured) starts the...

What is missing from my rear ceiling?

Something aftermarket? I have a 1990 Exceed and my ceiling looks like yours, minus the two large holes and outlines.

What things do you wish you thought about before you started your interior build?

Haha guess I should add a link to my buildout too, since I feel like the more examples you see, the more likely you’ll start putting together your own set of ideal customizations (though this was all already done when I got it, I’ve simply refined various things since)...

What things do you wish you thought about before you started your interior build?

To the original question, here are two links (somewhere there’s a third, in my memory at least) that I would definitely consider when doing another buildout (one day I’ll tear this one apart… one day, right?!)...

What things do you wish you thought about before you started your interior build?

Haha I hadn’t thought of mosquitoes! But the day only got snowier and I thought, maybe I could set up in the van for cooking our soup tonight. Seemed to work well with cross-flow airflow, I put the cooktop on top of the cooler cabinet.

What things do you wish you thought about before you started your interior build?

Though for the right buyer… maybe it was a bad idea, but I chose this Delica (after the wildfire) specifically owing to the existing camper buildout, since I didn’t think we’d get around doing it otherwise. There are definitely things I’ve learned by having someone else’s idea of a camper...
