Mine looked like that, too, but because this thing needs all the sound deadening it has, I sprayed mine with a little bleach to knock down any mold that might be in there, and sealed it back up.

Same story here. Turns out there was a rusted spot hiding under the upper edge of rubber windshield seal. I cleaned out the loose rust as best I could, then squirted a ton of silicone sealant under the seal. Probably not an approved body shop repair, but it stopped the leak.

Good info, guys, I think my glow plugs are in good shape, and I have a timer bypass installed as well. Perhaps I'm just too impatient and expecting it to fire right up like a modern gasoline engine. How long is too long to crank the starter, before I risk burning it out? Both batteries are new, btw.

My '91's 4D56 fires right up when it's above freezing, but when it's well below that (such as we get in the Colorado high country), it takes quite a lot of cranking, and a few failed tries before it runs. I know oil pan heaters are popular, but something in my gut tells me it's more of a fuel...
