IP front seal fuel leak and makeshift sprocket puller

Started up the van and noticed a heavy fuel leak. After some trial and error found it coming from the IP sprocket. Anybody know if I need to completely remove the pump to fix this or if I can change a gasket while still installed?

Do not try to remove the sprocket without using a puller! The driveshaft, main bearing, and fuel pump inside the IP can be damaged if the IP shaft is put under load.

If you don't have a puller you might be able to make something that will do the trick similar to this:

Yeah so this is the crank pulley, but the same technique works on the IP sprocket. By winding the main nut out and the two bolts in you can use the main nut to push the pulley off.

Did my timing belt two weeks ago and noticed the same leak, I changed IP front seal on the shaft without removal of the pump. the seal is pretty cheap but puts up a good fight coming out compared to the oil seals.

As stated above, the IP sprocket being banged out can really damage the IP. So use a puller or at least a makeshift one. Don't Misplace the small woodruff key when you take it out.

I drilled tiny pilot hole on old seal and used small screw with needle nose and knipex pliers to them pull it out. Be careful not to drill into the casing or drive the screw in too deep.

When you install the new seal make sure you find something thats the diameter of the new seal that fits over the IP shaft so you can press it evenly or you might go through a new seal. Get it in nice and snug.

It should be noted that with my front seal going out, a pump rebuild wouldn't of been a bad idea to freshen up all the other seal that might also be heading out. But I'm thrifty and will push it a little longer with my brand new $15 front seal before a diesel shop charges me the big bucks ;).

Im in Canada so got the seal from Rising Sun Auto Imports in Vancouver as he ships fast, but I know Combs country also has the genuine Zexel Seal: Combs Country Auto IP Front Seal
