Another side exit exhaust

Yep. Planning on replacing my exhaust in the next week or two. I already have a Magnaflow muffler, and will see what my shop can come up with in the way of downpipe, tail pipe, etc. Planning on a shorter exhaust, exiting the side before rear wheels. Hey, at least I'll be able to see what type of smoke I'm blowing : )

I know there's a few owners on here who've recently done this - any regrets, advice, second thoughts? Hit me with em.

Did mine years ago coming out in the same place.
Great for keeping an eye on the smoke and also keeps the start up puff of soot off anything you're towing.
Downside - a bit noisy for rear seat passengers and exhaust gas can go in the side window in traffic queues so not so good for occupants health.
Also frees up space underneath - I also removed the spare and put a storage crate thing under there.

One of the best things you can do. You’ll actually notice some performance increase off the start. Nothing crazy but I noticed. It also just sounds good, not too loud with the magnaflow. I also had a horrible heat shield rattle with my stock exhaust which was super annoying.

I printed these and took to my shop and they thanked me for the photos as it took a lot of the guesswork out.

How do you find the sound well driving after some use? more noticeable then before? also haven't noticed anyone mention if it leaves soot up the side?

I had a side exhaust installed a year ago. Magnaflow muffler. I have noticed that in city driving the sound is reflected back to me quite a bit more than with a rear exhaust. It is noticeably louder than before and on hot days with the driver's side window open, quite annoying sometimes. I had the van for only a few weeks before I did the replacement, so I can't comment on the perceived performance gains, but in hindsight, I wish I had gone with a replacement of the original.
My engine runs very lean and I never see black smoke, but yes, the right rear wheel has some soot. My rims are black, so not a big deal, but noticeable when washing the rig.

Same setup as Krazy - but my van runs rich and at altitude I dispense black smoke like the arrival of the Night King. My right rear (silver) rim is black and if I'm really on it, there will be a bit of black smoke on the arch right in front of it. Wipes off easy.

I don't mind the sound. It's more noticeable than before only because I installed a larger muffler. But yeah, like he said, the noise (prob without a larger muffler too) is reflected back at you when you pass cars, barriers, etc. I don't mind.

I’ve had mine over a year and I love the sound. I don’t think it’s obnoxious. At idle it’s pretty quiet. I have a white van and silver rims and I have zero soot build up on anything. I almost never see smoke except a puff at start up from cold.

I have the magnaflow muffler too and have just started hearing a rattle at certain rpm. I need to have that checked out as the muffler might be breaking down already. I’ve heard issues with this happening sometimes.

The side dump was one of the best early mods I did on my van. Two and a half in pipe flare to magnaflo muffler and a throaty tip. The sound is much better than it ever was with the original rusty line and it's much easier to diagnose smoke.

My recommendation is to check for leaks! My side exit had a few cracks at the welds due to how much the thing rattles.

I had another hanger installed in addition to a flex pipe just before the muffler. So far, so good.

@Kyre Do you have a ballpark figure for the cost of this if/when I get to a muffler shop?

I paid around $350 out the door. Not stainless, that will almost double the price and you don’t need stainless. Get multiple quotes and go to someone who does custom work already. I printed out the photos from http://www.wanderingpeso.com/exhaust-system/ and my exhaust guy said it helped a lot ( but I also took it to the same shop as they did so they already had a baseline)
