California Registration

Hello All! I’ve used this forum to strategically get my TownAce (I know not a delica) registered in California. However, I decided not to heed the warning of others and went to the CHP to have my VIN verified. He signed off on the VIN and I walked into the DMV the same day and walked out with plates. I’m honestly baffled how easy it was and feel like I got away with something. Has anyone else had this experience? Should I still expect to be flagged? It’s a 1996 diesel directly imported from Japan with zero emissions modifications. DMV mentioned the title will come in the mail within a few weeks.

You would seem to be in the minority, especially if your vehicle was not registered in another state prior to registering in California? I have a 93' Hilux Surf in BC I need to bring into the US not sure I would chance registering it in CA before another state first. CA is missing the boat on enthusiast vehicles, if they would make registering easier they could reap the benefits of more taxes and registrations paid.

Which DMV/CHP did you do this at?
