Doc Wong’s ‘94 L400 Mods

What I did was I just left the stock tire underneath the van. Even though the tires different. If I really had a flat, I would put it in front and limp belong to a gas station or something.

That’s assuming that you have front hubs that are freewheeling.

My L400 with the larger wheels will easily cruise 83mph at 3,000 rpm. I know, I got a speeding ticket at 85 mph ;-0

Anyway, since we’re talking wheels, I put these on and absolutely love them:

Wheels: Rota Grid Off-road: 16” #1680
Bolt Pattern: 6 x 139
Center ring: 110mm
0 offset

Tire: 265/70 R16 30.6”

They fit perfectly with minor modification to the front wheel wells.

I know most will consider a thinner wheel width, but I love this setup because:

-worked extremely well off road on Blue graded off road trails.
-improved mileage with the larger diameter wheels
-looks really cool
-did not need to lift it
- corners amazingly well-this is a BIG plus for me as I live up in the mountains where twisty roads are the norm.

Doc, can you please clarify your offset number? Do you have 0 offset wheels or +22 offset wheels? Or do you have +22 offset wheels, but then you added a spacer to achieve 0 offset? With your set-up, how far out beyond the plane of the body to your tires protrude? I have the same size tires as you that I want to instal, and am trying to find wheels with the offset that will look/function the best when running fender flares. Thanks!

My rims and tires are:
Wheels: Rota Grid Off-road: 16” #1680
Bolt Pattern: 6 x 139
Center ring: 110mm
0 offset
Tire: 265/70 R16 30.6”

I was going to use spacers, but since the wheels and tires cleared on the inside, it was perfect.

Tires do stick out maybe an inch or so. And for me, not enough to necessitate wheel flares.

Hey DocWong,

Did you see my post above about:
"Although the wheel is advertised as 110 mm CB, it is really only 105 mm. The reduced bore hole at the outside of the wheel enables the hub cap to be attached. The rear wheels fitted fine (just) but the front wheels would not go on because the extended wheel hub would not go through the 105 mm CB."

Just looking again at your wheel photos, did you remove your front wheel hubs to put on the wheels and then replace them afterwards as I see you have free wheeling hubs installed (what brand?).

Wondering if this is the way to make the ROTA wheels fit?

What brand of Free Wheeling hubs are you running?
Do you know the width?
Will they go straight onto the wheel - are they less than 110 mm wide?

The only place I found was on AliExpress. Search L400 Dash. Here’s what you’ll find: SD Motor EL Glow Gauge Plasma Dial Automatic Transmission for Mitsubish L400 Delica Space Gear Starwagon 1994 2007

$45
I can't seem to find this anywhere.

Doc mentions rear LEDs. I would like to pull the trigger, but worried about "hyper-flash." Can Doc or ayone else confirm what LEDs are good for the signal lights?

Here's my dash face plate mod. Now with adjustable brightness I can see the dash clearly on a bright sunny day. And it has an MPH scale along with the KM scale for speed.

I actually have done this exact same mod.... with one exception.... I don't yet have the gauges powered.

Can someone here recommend a good location to tap into 12v power in the cabin that goes on with ignition?

EDIT, got back out to the shop, I went over the lines with a multi-meter, and chose to splice into the 12v line that is use to control the dash dimming controls. This way its linked up perfectly with the rest of the dash, and goes on and off with the other internal lights.
