L300 in Michigan

Hey all,

Purchased a 96 auto diesel l300 a few months ago to replace my 91 2dr Montero. We have a 10-month-old daughter and I found myself not driving the Montero as it was a pain to get her in and out of the car seat. I love old Japanese cars and motorcycles and was looking for something like the Montero. I entertain the idea of a Delica but it seemed a pain to get one. Until I stumbled across a local importer 30 min from my house that had 4 l300s and 2 l400s on inventory! Had to check it out, and ended up driving off the lot with a clean l300 a few weeks later! A 96 Montero was the first new car my parents had ever purchased and it later became my first car. I have tons of fond memories of family road trips and teenage construction sight hooning with friends. I remember drooling over JAOS parts I would never be able to afford as a teenager awaiting my license. I hope that my daughter has some great experiences in the van as she grows up too. I use the van mostly for commuting to work and for family outings on the weekend. We do enjoy state forests, national parks, camping, and hiking so it'll get to stretch its legs every now and then.

The van altogether is pretty clean, 70k'ish miles. Has some pro-comp shocks and aftermarket wheels but otherwise mostly stock. I have changed the oil, air filter, fan clutch, fan, alternator belts, PS belt, AC belt, and I have a fresh fuel filter waiting to be installed. I also am in the process of an EGR delete, boost, EGT, and coolant temp gauge install. I have a thermostat, rad hoses, and aluminum rad on the way as well. The stock temp gauge was really wonky and starts mid-way hot on a cold engine. Kinda creepy. With the aftermarket gauge, I have only hit 133f for a max temp, so I believe my thermostat is stuck open.

Plans for upgrades are new tires, fresh bushings, maybe a lift, hitch, roof rack, extra lighting, and possibly a winch way down the line. I also plan to turn up the boost to 14psi and may try to fit an intercooler later down the road. I'm pretty mechanically inclined and love to modify vehicles. As far as old J tin, I currently own a 76 Datsun 280z that I swapped an rb25 (hopped up to 400hp), a 2rz swapped 87 Corolla drift build, an 87 Corolla hatch waiting to be restored, and a 71 CB500. I am very familiar with turbo systems but am inexperienced with diesel engines. I have been creeping on this forum for a while and it has been a huge resource. Thanks!

I look forward to being more interactive, learning, and hopefully helpful to some. If any of you guys are in Michigan I would love to meet up at some point.

Nice clean ride and welcome to the forum! I'm a newbie also and found it very educational here. My son and I are kind of doing the same things as you are, going through the list of things you need to do on a Delica to keep it reliable and running smooth into the future.

I live in MI and have been thinking about picking up a Delica too. I assume you went to JDM Sport Classics in Three Rivers. How was your experience and the quality of their vehicles?

Yep! The quality of the selection was pretty good. I felt like getting to test drive 3 different vans with different features and issues made the process of buying an expensive, obscure, 25-year-old imported vehicle sit better in my stomach. Much lower pressure than buying from a long-distance private party, and they have a friendly professional team. Would recommend! My family is very happy with our purchase. Tell them "Raphael says hi" for me if you stop by there!

Installed a rad, coolant hoses, and thermostat from Delicaworks ITL last Weekend. My OG thermostat was toasted! The ears were broken off and it was stuck in the wide-open position. The new rad is pretty high quality and installed with no issues like stock. Would recommend! My temps are at 150-165F (40-20 deg F outside). Still need to install a fuel filter and the EGT sensor. Rad is working great! No issues as of yet. Replacing the rad on anything I buy over 20 years old is SOP.

Newly installed items are the 3 in 1 Glow shift gauge and BFG KOF2 31's, and my custom Jaos rep mudflaps :p

I also have a 2in lift kit that I have been grabbing parts for including Bilstein front shock and Monroe air rears.

Thinking about getting a roof rack and winch/recovery gear next!

Pic of the Montero and the Delica for fun!

Unfortunately, the Montero will be up for sale soon...

that looks great. are you getting rubbing with the 31s before installing your lift? do you have a 31" spare?
Thanks! Mild rubbing at full lock, but it looks like the PO did some body trimming before I got it. No spare 31 yet, I gotta figure out a way to carry it.

Thanks, and congrats on the new Delica! We should link up sometime. It would be cool to start a little network of Michigan Delica owners for support, knowledge, and parts.

I'm pretty familiar with turbos, not Delica specific but just in general. What's up?

That’s be great! I’m not too far. What’s your take on this? I thought initially turbo seals but now maybe egr or a seep from mild blow by?

This is the location of my leak if you can see it. It’s looking down under the drivers seat.

It's pretty hard for me to identify from the pictures. But I think you are referencing 12632? If so, replace with a new rubber/silicone pipe clean up the area, you could do an EGR block off, then monitor for additional buildup oil leakage. It will at least give you an idea of the severity of the issue. And hopefully, save you from throwing parts at it. I would try this before pulling the turbo for inspection. Additionally, you could do a really scary compression/leak-down test...but then you know.

Thanks for the reply! I ended up replacing that part number and did an EGR delete while I was in there. Appears there was a pinhole in that boost pipe so I beleive that was the issue. I have a thermostat ordered as well while it’s all torn apart. As far as the compression test would that just involve pulling injectors one by one and inserting a compression test Gauge?
