L400 partial EGR delete and mystery hose?

Hey, I'm a brand new delica owner so this might be a newbie question. Looking at where my EGR is supposed to be I see a plate bolted onto what I assume is the input side(?). The output side of the EGR is not blocked by anything and I'm wondering if this could cause any issues?(PLEASE SEE ATTACHED PHOTOS) On-top of this there is a hose on the back wall that is not attached to anything, covered in carbon and has a hole blown through the side of it. It's connected to the top of the engine block and from what I've seen in other pictures it looks like the end should connect near the air filter housing(bolt stuck in place in second photo). I'm guessing that this is part of the EGR assembly but I'm not sure and I'm also wondering if this detached could cause any issues for my engine?

Overall my Delica feels very happy, starts up great in as cold as -5c, and drives great. The only issue I have noticed is that after a cold start the engine will run fine but after 5 minutes or so she will idle rough and cough out smoke. This only happens before the engine warms up and the van idles very stably once my coolent temp gauge reads warm. Yesterday I checked my glow plugs, they're all in good shape and looked over my injectors and could not see any carbon build up around any of them. I'm wondering if this is something to be concerned of or if it's normal for a diesel Delica in a colder climate?

Well, the exhaust side of the EGR valve pipe must also be blocked somehow... otherwise that would be a massive exhaust leak; you would know. Sometimes people put thin plates in-between as a kind of "hidden" EGR delete.

The second pipe is from the valve cover breather... basically, instead of installing a catch can and routing it back to the intake they decided to just let it drip overboard. I'm surprised it doesn't smell like hot/leaking oil when running. That looks to be a bad location to me as it is dripping very close to the exhaust manifold/pipe. Oil and really hot exhaust can result in fire. And I doubt that hole "blew out;" melted is more likely.

The stumble after starting could be the afterglow funcion not working correctly, or just being inadequate/timing out. You might need to manually bring the idle up to ~1000 and hold it until it warms up a bit... there should be a throttle lock for that. You know it's ok to release it when the rpm starts to increase on it's own.
 
Thanks for the reply. For the valve cover breather would it be worth replacing the hose, or would re-routing to avoid the exhaust manifold be adequate? Or would it be better to replace the entire breather system with a catch can and run it back into the air intake?

As for the glow plugs is there a way to adjust the afterglow function or would that just be a symptom of plugs that are on their way out?
 
Personally I would add a catch can and rout it back to the intake... it's the environmentally friendly answer.

There is a way to adjust the afterglow duration via the throttle position sensor on the L300 4D56, not sure about the 4M40. I'm also not sure it needs to be (should be) adjusted from your description. But it is not a sign that the glow plugs are on the way out.

On stock L400's with EGR valves intact that pipe connects to a fitting on the air cleaner assembly. Currently Yours has a bolt (second pic on your post) in the hole on the air cleaner elbow where this pipe connects when stock. There's a 90-degree plastic elbow that fits in that hole for that hose to connect to on a stock set up.

I haven't done the delete on our L400 yet so not sure what's the "correct" way to deal with that hose when the EGR valve is deleted.

That hose isn't directly involved in the EGR delete... but it's kind of related.

Not really familiar with catch cans as my other diesels, tractors and Duramax don't have one. In looking at the catch cans it would seem that even with a stock set up, w/o deleting the EGR valve, it would be beneficial to put a catch can in the hose between the engine and the air intake to reduce oil blow etc. by from getting into the turbo, intercooler etc. Am I interrupting this correctly?

Yes. And if you can eliminate the oil going into the intake, then the EGR delete is less of a concern.
