Leaking Fuel - Injection Pump & Other Leaks

Thanks for the follow-up and letting us know how it went. I'm having the same issues with really rough starts and looking to replace the filter housing, injectors, and hoses first before looking into seals/rebuild on the IP. Where did you end up getting it rebuild? All the diesel mechanics near me won't touch it.

I had mine done through Dean's Car Care in Portland. They handled the removal/install and sent it out to another company nearby. My understanding is that it's a Boshe injection pump and because of that once it's out of the scary foreign car it's a straightforward rebuild. If you're not in the PNW, give Dean's a call and ask who they use for the rebuild. If you can get it out and send it to them you should be set.

I'd start with those cheaper fixes and see if that does the trick. I had the pump rebuilt in Portland OR at Diesel Fuel Injection Service. I removed it myself and brought it in for the rebuild - it looks brand new! A stark contrast to the engine block next to it :) They were incredibly knowledgable, friendly, and helpful. When I was initially trying to diagnose the problem prior to the rebuild they gave me a few leads to track down first. I'm pretty sure you could ship it to them for the rebuild and they can send it back.

Awesome! I'm in Maryland for the time being and don't trust myself enough with the R&R without damaging something further. Looking to see if whacking the other moles stops the problem before I spring on it. Thanks for the names, though!

I'm rolling up the west coast, leaving Ojai today end spot Seattle. I noticed a small leak in my injector yesterday. Do you think I can make it to Portland for the overhaul? Does anyone know how quickly these leaks can deteriorate?

A tip when removing the IP for service:

There's a bracket under the IP that bolts it to the engine block. The bracket is in two pieces, with a couple of bolts in the middle that run in slotted holes. The idea is that when setting the timing, you loosen those two bolts so the IP can rotate.

If you're removing the IP to have it serviced, don't touch those two bolts. Remove the bracket in one piece by unbolting it from the IP and the engine block. That way when you reinstall the IP you won't have to worry about setting the timing- the bracket will make sure the IP goes back in the same orientation.

Great tip! I DIDN'T do this and my timing was off - blowing lots of white smoke initially. It took a lot of adjusting to get it right. Next time (hopefully there isn’t a next time) I’ll be sure to do it that way.

You’ll be fine on your drive to Seattle (unless it’s gushing). I drove mine around for a few months until I got the IP seals replaced. A hot engine won’t ignite the Diesel.
