Hi there, I'm a van guy from way back (Midis and Serena) but have been driving a Mazda B2500 ute turbo diesel for the last 20 years. Love that thing.
I'm thinking of getting a Delica D5 4WD (or an L400) to use as a daily, take the dirt bike out to rides and do some camping. I'm here to find out of the Delica is my all rounder. It would be great to get your input. So far I'm thinking D5 2007- 2013, or a low kms L400. Not sure whether to go diesel or petrol? Would personally love a manual but don't know if that's available in NZ. Nice to meet you all and get your thoughts :)

The D5 is pretty sweet, and they're getting cheaper all the time. Petrol D5s have a CVT but it's reliable. Diesel D5's (introduced 2013 so you might find one or two in your range) have a proper automatic, but they're still expensive.

L400s are getting old now, and parts aren't as easy to find as the L300. L400s can rust out on the chassis rails near the suspension mounts, so watch out for that. The L400 is also thirsty!

D5 isn't available in manual, and Manual L400s are rare.

Awesome, thank you. I'm set on a D5 now. For daily use/economy/acceleration would you recommend the turbo diesel or the petrol? Weekdays around town, weekends taking the bike out via the motorways. Also did they do a slightly higher roof as a factory option?

The diesel is awesome, but still a bit rare and more expensive. But the petrol has plenty of power too. They only come in one roof height.

Oh and the D5 is slightly too short to fit a sheet of ply inside, if that's relevant to you.

Thanks. The main thing for me is being able to get a dirt bike in, minus the passenger side second row seat.
