Replacement Aluminum Radiator

Hi All,

As I'm prepping for a big trip I'd like to replace the radiator on my L300 for an aluminum version. As my order from DelicaWorks will likely take some time to arrive I was looking at some of the aluminum radiators on ebay as a mid term solution.

Unfortunately, I need to figure out a mid term solution as I know my current radiator is on its way out and the van needs to set off ~Sep 15th.

Has anyone had any luck with the aluminum radiators on ebay? Was looking at the following example that looked pretty solid, with relatively think cores

Thanks!

If Evan has them in stock, he can usually get them out to US pretty quick. Granted I'm in California, I am getting stuff 4-5 days after he ships.
Can't vouch for ebay radiators as I don't know anyone that has tried them.

Gotta love the ebay ad, picture verbiage. Just what I want in a radiator, 'delicate & artificial' :)

how long are you setting off for and how do you know its on its way out? Are you sure it's not another component in you system? Hoses, Radiator Cap, air bubble?

You can check the radiator temp by using an infrared thermometer and shooting a few points left to right across the core. If they are very different could signify clogging. If it is clogging you can try a solvent flush to open it up a little. That said these vans are so old that might be enough.

You can hit up Rising Sun Auto in New Westminster BC, they have Hyundai Radiators. I am sure Delica USA has as well and that's close to you. I just got one from Rising Sun since mine shit the bed. Wanted to get one from Evan but that fell apart and I needed one stat. She runs fine and I take her up into the mountains all the time. 1/4-1/2 is where it likes to live but regulates well.

Are there any threads on replacing the radiator? I think this will be my first project with one of these, and I'm wondering what the steps are. Thanks in advance!

Every Ebay radiator that I have purchased for the L300s have had to be re-welded at the upper radiator hose connection for proper alignment. I do not recommend them.

IIRC, @92_talon_awd bought an eBay radiator. Not sure of their experience with that, or which specific vendor they went with.

What have people's shipping experience been with T³ 4x4? They have posted comments on FB, saying that shipping from Taiwan is severely delayed and expensive due to Covid. Any thoughts?

Re: T³ 4x4 shipping rates/times. Yes, recently shipping has become really expensive; case in point I inquired about getting weather stripping for the two front doors -parts $60, S&H added $209 so $269 for weather stripping delivered. That said as long as they have the item in stock they are able to get stuff to the West Coast in 3-4 transit time. Hoping shipping rates reduce at some point to pre-covid rates.

ive just purchased a radiator from Coombs County Autos. It looks like the same one that is in my van now, just newer. ive actually been waiting since the end of march for a rad from Deliworks but decided to get one from CC since they have some available. Probably not as good as the Deliworks option but still better than my old radiator. Shipping from Canada is about a week to 10 days.

I went with a GPI racing radiator. So far I like it fine. Cruising at 60-65mph with EGT's steady around 450-500 and ambient temps about 75F, my hot side temps were between 179-183 and my cold side was between 105-120. On a warmer day like 90 and above with the same inputs, my hot side stays around 185 and my cold side will get up to 155. I remembered how much the aluminum radiators like to heat soak on my old turbo cars but it really dumps the heat quickly as soon as I start slowing down. The only pain was it took a little bit of heating and bending of the fan shroud to get it to fit perfectly.

I do have a stock temp thermostat installed for those wondering.

How's that GPI aluminum radiator doing? Considering this instead of paying the gastly int'l shipping prices from DelicaWorks/T3.

Is this the one? Will it work for Manual Trans?

I bought my radiator from Delicaworks and just drove from coast to coast in some HEAT. Not sure I would have made it with the stock radiator. I don’t have a coolant gauge, just the stock gauge and an EGT gauge. I never went over 1200 for exhaust and the stock gauge never went over half while climbing passes. Cooled down extremely quick as well. Highly recommend even with the shipping costs. I believe I paid around $600 shipped with new thermostat and silicone upper and lower hoses. Highly worth it IMO. Will be driving back to the west coast in a month. Hope the heat wave will chill out.

Yeah Ive decided on the delicaworks rad. Makes me feel muchh better about driving up to Oregon in a few months.
Will probably have the EGT in by then too.

Appreciate your input!
