Sound deadening over the interior side of engine bay

What’s up guys

I’m currently in the middle of gutting my van and layed down some kilmat across the floor before I put down the subfloor. I’m looking to kill some noise and maybe retain some temp on the inside. Doing wool in the walls and roof so I should be good.

Has anyone ever done insulation or sound deadening over the interior side of the engine bay? My concern is the Kilmat getting too hot. It’s rated up to 220 degrees F. I know that thing gets hot just by feeling the carpet. I just don’t know how hot. Biggest fear is the Kilmat just turning to goo and making a giant mess. I’m a dummy and didn’t think of it until I applied it, but rather peel it off now before it gets boxed in.

thoughts?

My alternative is building out a box to go over the bay, stuffing it with wool and lining it with kilmat on the inside. Might be over doing it, but there’s just so much heat that comes up through that area and being in the hot south, it’s rough cooling this thing down.

@nick6669 a year later, any issues on yours with the Kilmat on the engine hump? Did you end up adding insulation, as well? About to do the same.

I removed the old liner under the hump and added dynamat hoodliner. It’s considerably more quiet and less heat on the passengers butt. Highly recommend.

I’ll be honest, I don’t know for sure. I’m sure it knocked out some noise so it’s doing it’s job in that regard. All I put over it was some auto carpet that’s conforming so I was able to stretch it over the hump without any weird creases. I’m considering boxing it in with some insulation to kill the heat it gives off, because it’s unreal. Feels like I have heated seats year round which is nice for the whole four months of cold weather we get in Georgia.

One thing I will note that is of concern, but not detrimental, is that since I converted the van there is a slight chemical smell when its super hot. I can’t really attribute that to anything other than possibly the kilmat or vinyl floors. Like maybe when the adhesive heats up and the lack of ventilation when sitting in the sun with the windows up. It’s not harsh, but definitely noticeable so I keep it pretty ventilated out of precaution. I’m a total freak when it comes to smells so maybe I’m just being a hypochondriac or it’s something completely unrelated. Who knows.

For extra sound deadening and heat reflecting, remove the pressed cotton insulator pad from the engine cover and replace it with hood liner:

It makes a noticeable difference to the engine noise and heat coming into the cab.

If you're feeling extra fancy, line the drivers side engine cover too (the removable panel the drivers seat is bolted to).

Also check that the rubber seal around the engine cover is in place and seals properly. The latches at the front are adjustable if it's not quite tight enough.
