Transmission problem 2002 V6 Auto 188k km

I had a code 41(1st NOT SYNCR) show up on my van the other day. When coming to a stop it wouldn't go again, just revved up like it was low on fluid. I haven't had time to look into it any further than that and it's not driveable atm. The shift indicator was flashing-indicating the trouble code is stored. When I'd shift into drive or reverse it'd bang pretty hard until I cleared the code then the banging quit instantly. But it'd still seem like it falls out of gear after driving a few feet. I'm hoping I don't need a transmission, the few used I found so far are $2800-3000 plus shipping.

One other thing I noticed that I don't know if it's normal or not, when in drive and I hit the hold button on the dash there's a loud buzzing from either under the hood or at the transmission. Sounds like an old ford starter solenoid when you have a dead battery or corroded terminals. I don't remember hearing that before but I've only tried that button a time or two when I first bought it last fall.

I'll stick this here for later.

So far I figure it's got an V4A51 transmission, van has a 3/2002 build date so I think the part number is MR593854

Code: 41 OBDII: P0731- 1st Gear Incorrect Ratio

Possible causes: Mechanical Solenoid Failure
Low Line Pressure
Low Fluid Level
Sealing Ring Failure
Piston Seal Failure
Valve Body Malfunction

I got the above from a link in this useful thread with still active links https://www.delicaclub.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=18939&sid=bc8c5c634ad3baa866f1a3c701986ba8

I'm hoping it's just a 1st gear solenoid failure.

I took it for another drive the other day to get it to throw a code again after clearing it the other week. When coming to a start with the selector in Drive, when you go to drive a way it'll move about 10' then kick out of gear/loose drive. I found if I hit the hold button it'll start out in second and seemed to shift to 3rd eventually. I tried this a few times then that quit working and it got stuck in 3rd gear so I quit messing with it and limped it home...

Yesterday I unplugged one of the large connectors on top the transmission and was able to check resistance for the solenoids and fluid temp sensor. They were all within spec.

All the other connectors looked clean and appeared to be locked in properly. I didn't pull the pan cause it looks like a pita, the exhaust has to be removed and I don't have torches(to heat the rusted studs and nuts). So it's now a driveway ornament.

Next plan is to see if a local transmission shop will take a look and hopefully fix it.

So I limped the van over to a transmission shop the other day. I'm thinking there's something mechanically effed inside it. While in drive you can hold the gas a brake and it'll just rev up while the transmission slips. With the back end jacked up off the ground, at low speeds(in first gear) there's some not so good sounds coming from inside the transmission.

If you hit the hold button(starts out in 2nd) or shift to 2nd manually it works normally-ish. I'd rather get it rebuilt than try my luck on a used one with similar mileage that'd cost over $3000 by the time it's shipped.

Well, that was a waste of time and $100. Sounds like the trans shop was driving it with the hold button engaged. They basically said they can't find anything wrong and their scanners wouldn't communicate with it. Recommended taking it to a jdm shop. I'm not paying rhd tax so I guess I'm on my own here.
Does anyone know if a Montero Sport transmission will bolt right into to one of these things?
