Turbo Oil Leak

Aloha all,

Any ideas where this oil leak could be coming from at my turbo or what would be causing it? Possible I just didn’t reassemble something tight enough. Looks like oil is leaking into my exhaust too as it is coming out of a weak junction point down the line from the manifold

That looks like it might be an internal oil seal in the turbo. Are you blowing a lot of smoke, that’s a lot of oil on the exhaust side not to be getting at least a moderate amount of smoke out the exhaust.

I am blowing some smoke, not sure if it’s any more than normal

Sure. Remove the down pipe, the actuator, all the air intake pipes and the 3 bolts that bolt it to the manifold. I might be missing something but that’s the bulk of it. Shouldn’t have to pull the exhaust manifold.

Well, that's the way it's supposed to work; but after 25+ yrs things often do not want to be separated....
Just trying to determine how much time I gotta set aside to do this
I would allow extra time just in case you find yourself having to drill out and replace a broken stud or some such similar added fun.

Is there a recommended kit for the internal seals of the turbo? Or would others recommend I just buy a new turbo? I have not rebuilt one before

Just wanted to loop back to this. Are there any readily available alternatives for the inner seals? Things don’t ship to Hawai’i quick so would love if I could pick it up at an auto parts store but I doubt it

Turbo rebuild kits are a thing (search TD04 Rebuild Kit), but if your turbo has just plain worn out it might be better to buy a whole new one.

Still, the kits are cheap enough. It could be worth trying.

Sounds like I’m going to go this route but does anyone know a reliable supplier for the turbo? I’d prefer not to drop $700 on one right now but understand if the alternative is garbage

Anyone have ideas are reliable resource to buy a new turbo? Just cautious of buying something junk

Don't quote me (that sounds strange in my internal monologue nowadays, maybe my coffee isn't firing my synapses yet, but I digress) I believe a member here @sck_nogas sourced a replacement turbo from somewhere in Europe that wasn't junk but also wasn't one of the $700+ units. Maybe he can chime in on source?
