Turbo Question for 1991 L300

Hi Guys!

I've upgraded the turbo is our 1991 L300 from the stock TD04-09B to a TD04-10T. We do quite a bit of driving over mountain passes here in Western Wyoming. I had a mechanic in Flagstaff install the turbo, and a buddy drive it up.
Once arrived the entire engine bay and undercarriage was covered in soot, and upon further inspection it looks as though the wastegate arm had come unscrewed.
I’ve reattached the coupling nut and snugged it up, but there is still exhaust coming from around the shut circular door when running.
My question is this: is there supposed to be another attachment or something else to create a better seal, which may have fallen off?
Thanks for any input you might have

Umm, maybe I need more coffee or you are trying to gas light folks; but that does not look right at all. It almost looks like you replaced a three bolt turbo w/a later 5 bolt without swapping to a 5 bolt downpipe. Your wastegate should dump into exhaust pipe. If this is a real question I would like to know who that mechanic is in Flagstaff to either steer clear of them or reco them to my enemies.

Absolutely right! Get a 5 bolt exhaust bolt pattern turbo down pipe. We have them in stock.

Nope, that's a 3 bolt turbo. The wastegate blanking plug blew out... it's there so the wastegate flapper can actually be installed, and on better/OEM turbos it is tack welded to make sure it doesn't blow out. On this turbo it looks like they cheaped out and tried to secure it by peening the edge... it didn't work. It's not terribly uncommon actually, and if you get a replacement it's worth having it tack welded in place.

thanks SK!

Now time to start the hunt for a blanking plug.

cheers fellas. Thanks for the input
IDT you will find one... I think it's a one-off fabrication; it's pretty easy to make a disk with a beveled edge, but I suspect it will be fussy.
