Brake upgrade stage 2: larger discs

Brake upgrade *upgrade* time.

This upgrade only works with 16" or larger wheels.
Parts:
  • If you already have the 2-piston brake calipers upgrade, you only need the larger brackets: MB858397 and MB858396. (Febest part numbers 0477C-K94WFR and 0477C-K94WFL)
  • If you need both calipers and brackets as an assembly they're MB858406 and MB858407
  • MB699716 brake discs x2 (I used DBA 237S, but TRW DF4485 should be the same part)**
Edit: A 2001 Montero Sport 3.5 V6 4WD with the optional 16" wheels uses these discs. For example, Here's the listing on Rockauto.com. You want the discs listed as "Front, for 16" wheels" or "315mm diameter". Also note that Rockauto lists the rear discs in the same place: front discs are 24mm thick and vented, if you're looking at solid discs then you're looking at the wrong ones.
  • MB699715, MB699714 back plates/dust shields
These are the brake discs and caliper brackets from a Pajero with 16" wheel option. The brake discs have the same dimensions as stock L300 discs, apart from the increased diameter. How much bigger are they?

Much bigger.

You'll need to trim the top flange off the brake backing plate- along the line in white:
Just buy the correct backplates in the next post.

That poor backing plate, there's not much left of it now.

Here's the standard twin-piston upgrade just after installation. Note how the brake pad is tucked under the wheel hub flange:

And here's the larger brakes. The brake pad is much further out.

Now I just have to go and bed them in: find a nice empty road, and use them in anger 5 or 6 times form 100kph, get them nice and smoking hot. But at least I can confirm that they bolt on and fit perfectly! No surprises at all.

Growler, it sounds like this is only possible as a secondary upgrade after you swap out to the dual position caliper. Am I correct in how I read this? Bc this seems like a cleaner and easier solution if you can just swap your rotors and add the brackets while running single pistons. Probably similar benefit to just running dual piston but with maintaining your “standard pedal feel”.

You're reading it correctly: the larger discs and extended brackets only work with the dual piston callipers. Single piston callipers do not have a "larger disc" upgrade option.

Add to the shopping list for the big brake upgrade: MB699715, MB699714 brake back plates.

Almost a bolt-on, you just need to slot the four centre holes a little.

So, if I'm tracking all of this, there is a series of upgrades that are "worth it"
  • There's the 2 piston upgrade
    • Rebuild kit x2 MB857840
    • Pistons x4 MB857837
    • Top sliding pins x2 MB618227
    • Bottom sliding pins (with rubber tip) x2 MB618228
  • There's the bigger disc upgrade
    • 16" or larger wheels
    • 2-piston brake calipers (as per the upgrade earlier in this thread).
    • MB699716 brake discs x2 (I used DBA 237S, but TRW DF4485 should be the same part)
    • MB858397 and MB858396 caliper brackets. (Febest part numbers 0477C-K94WFR and 0477C-K94WFL)
  • Finally, there's the larger back plates
    • MB699715, MB699714 brake back plates.
But, not the master cylinder 7/8 to 1 inch upgrade.

Is that right?

Update from Pete in Australia:
"If you would like to do the upgrade calipers AND larger discs(315mm), I have found the OEM part number for the dual pot Calipers that ALREADY have the correct larger bracket for the larger disc (OEM Part number MB858406 and MB858407). This saves you buying calipers, then buying the brackets as well. If you already have the upgraded calipers, then you just buy the brackets (Febest part no. 0477C-K94WFR AND 0477C-K94WFL) and the larger discs (part numbers as above). I hope this helps some people."
