Clutch Issues

hi y’all. Got a new noise, rattling until clutch is depressed. Also started to get a whiff of that scorched clutch smell. Happened really fast, no warning leading up to it unless I just didn’t notice. I know these have a weak 5th gear, hope I didn’t really mess this up. I have the gas g63b with v5m21 / km147, is this the same as you diesel folks? It seems maybe the internals are the same but the bell housing is what’s unique. I don’t know this is beyond my skill level, but I’m learning cause there’s always something wrong with this thing

I have the KM147 with a g63B petrol/gas as well. If its just the clutch smell, 5th gear is probably just fine. You are probably hearing clutch material, loose clutch springs. 5th gear problems are usually associated with having issues going into reverse or other gears.

The rattling might also be your clutch release bearing, which stops rattling when it's pressed against the clutch. Whatever's causing it though, you'll want to replace the clutch, release bearing, and the flywheel spigot bearing.

The V5M21/KM147 gearbox is the same for both diesel and petrol engines- even the bellhousing!

Not hard if you have a transmission jack. A floor jack would work, but you would have to have a way to secure the transmission to the jack. I suppose if you had a few big friends to help you could muscle it down. Maybe check some videos on youtube and see if it is something you want to tackle. I have done this several times on different cars/trucks, but not on the Delica. Remove front and rear driveshafts, undo shift linkages, support transmission while undoing bolts on bellhousing, pull the tranny back away from the engine, and you will then have access to the clutch and flywheel.

^What he said. It's relatively easy if you have a transmission jack (or if you build a cradle to work with a floor jack that you can then roll backwards), but don't try lifting the transmission off by hand; the gearbox+transfer case are *really* heavy and awkwardly balanced, you'll end up dropping it and/or bending the input shaft.

Replacing the clutch and release bearing is super easy- check Youtube for videos. You'll need a (cheap, plastic) clutch plate alignment tool- if one doesn't come with the clutch kit. The spigot/pilot bearing is easy to remove once you know the trick: grease. Or, as I just found while searching for a video, *bread*. Much less messy than grease. Youtube video here.

Thanks guys! It’s looking like I’m going to have to do this myself. The shops around here either don’t wanna deal with it, or it’ll take forever and cost at least $3000. It sounds like the transmission bearings are worn out. I’m getting a whirring sound in all gears but 4th in addition to the rattle. I did notice a different sound after I changed fluids, it was silent before.

What type of fluid did you replace it with? It shouldn't have change the sound. There may be something else going on here with your transmission.

Replaced with the same type fluid, I think it just might be coincidental. Pretty certain the transmission bearings are going out as well.

I’m am having a tough time finding parts for this gearbox, I’m not an idiot and I’m searching partsouq etc. I guess I was hoping it would be available in the states, does the montero use this box or is there a better way to search for these parts? Sorry if these questions are covered elsewhere, doing my best to search around.

I want to say the mighty max pickup might have used this transmission as well as the Dodge D50 pickup. Might want to check those two.

I've replied on the other thread (http://delicaforum.com/index.php?threads/5-speed-rebuild.515/) since this thread's about the clutch, and the other one's about rebuilding a 5-speed: keeping the topics separate will help others in the future.
