Depends, you should be able to run off just the alternator if you're not running lights/accessories.
You only need 12v to keep the IP shutoff solenoid open; and you also need 12v to enable 4th gear (OD) on an automatic. If the alternator has failed the shutoff solenoid could be bypassed, but then you couldn't shut the engine off normally. The better answer there is to apply 12v to the shutoff solenoid from a secondary source (jump pack/etc)... it doesn't need much amperage.
