Hey All -
I am not a professional mechanic but I play one online . Last week I dropped my left front side for failure to tighten up the lug nuts. The damage to the left side was the rotor and the lower ball joint ground down as well as the bottom 1/4" of the Spindle/Knuckle assembly. I wanted to give back a little so here is my report on what I found and how I fixed it.
Damage to the Ball Joint, Spindle and Rotor -
First thing - If you are not mechanical like myself it always helps to watch a video or two so you know what you are getting into. I found this video here of the front rotors being replaced on a Mitsubishi Montero (US) and surprisingly other than the diameter of the hub it is the same exact process to pull the rotors on a 1994 L400 Spacegear.
Replacing the Calipers and Rotors on a Montero
I also found this video helpful on tearing apart the suspension to get the damaged spindle off the left side and replaced -
Delica L400 Driveshaft Removal
As far as parts go, the calipers and brake pads from a 1992 Mitsubishi Montero were an exact replacement with no modifications necessary.
Mitsubishi Montero Part Numbers - CARDONE 19B1676 Brake Caliper or BestBrake Reman 19B1676. Napa has an Adaptive One brand with part#ADC 1526XB but I have not confirmed it is the exact match. There is an A and B designation for left or right caliper.
Brake pads are from a 1992 Mitsubishi Montero as well. I got them from O'Reillys SC530 was the part number, Napa Part Number is PF7412X. I am sure there are dozens of pads out there that fit but that should get you started.
Rotors unfortunately were a different story. I initially bought the rotors for a 1992 Montero and the internal hole for the hub was too small. The Montero uses 87mm hubs while the Delica uses 93mm hubs. I searched far and wide in the USA and could not find the rotors to match. If anyone knows of a matching rotor for an L400 in the US, let me know. The closest place I could find them to me (WA State) was from Coombs Auto up in Canada for $85 CA each plus shipping. The rotors on the Coombs site did not look exactly like the rotors I pulled off and did not have measurements. So I ended up ordering the rotors from www.onlineparts.co.uk It'll probably take a few more days to get here but if they ship the exact part as was in the description I should be good to go. I did attached the PDF from Brembo that has the exact part with measurements that you will need to find. Also THIS PAGE HAS A LIST UNDER TECH DOCS of part manufacturers and numbers for the replacement rotor. Long list but unfortunately none of them cross reference with anything in the USA. For reference in case the part numbers are different for other years of L400's the Mitsubishi Part Number for the front rotors on a 1994 SWB Delica L400 (PE8W) is - MB895730
So far I have been able to take everything apart. Now waiting for the rotors to come in so that I can finish this job up and get everything back together.
Once I get the rotors in I will post some more pictures.
