Leaking on the back of IP pump

If you are lucky, it might just be a loose output fitting/line... better yet, the return hose.

I had a leak on the back of my pump and had it completely rebuilt. Sucks this is happening on the road…

Return line kind of make sense, it idles good, no leak when I am at 2500 rpm. I am in Calistoga heading toward Clearlake then Grass Valley, California. Does anyone know a 4d56 mechanic in the area?

I checked the return line, there is no leak there. There is no fuel starvation issue. Only leaks at idle & it idles fine.

in my experience the years of low sulphur diesel and hard seals created my injection pump leak. Either way the pump needs to come out to be resealed. I opted for the full rebuild given the internal components are wear items. Good news is if it is a small drip you should be able to get home without issue

Thx for that good news engine is running fine and not leaking at cruising RPM so I am continuing my trip, for now. I did some googling some found this to be the culprit. Do you know what is the function of this? See pictures. I am not sure this is my issue. I will get the fuel pump rebuilt when I get home. Thx

This looks to be part of the seal kit to rebuild the injection pump. I believe I have the seal kit in my garage in Carson City, Nevada. I see you’re coming through grass Valley I can offer you the seal kit and some tools to pop it in on your trip… if one can get to the part without removing the pump

That picture is for the timing advance cover. There are two, one on each side. That is the "power" side. It gets full internal transfer pump pressure from the hole in the piston. That causes the piston to move and advance the injection timing. On the other side of the pump is the cover with the spring in it that the pressure is working against.

The power side cover is closest to the block. So it will be tight.

Granted this is just one of the places it can leak. Anything in red in the pic that sk66 posted can leak.

Thanks but the pump will have to be removed. It is running fine now, for now we keep moving forward currently camp in Clearlake, ca. next stop is Grass Valley. Unless I can find someone on my path of travel that has experience rebuilding these IP.

Maybe this will help... looks like that's the side cover plate (seal 1)View attachment 22766
Thx do you know where I can get the rebuild kit? I usually get my parts from megazip but it will take weeks. Also do you know someone who have experience rebuilding these IP. My home base is Los Angeles. Hopefully I can make it home.

Once you get home contact a reputable diesel injection shop. Years ago @Scott recommend this route and it was the right choice for me. The shop will source the parts, rebuild, and calibrate the injection pump. I used diamond diesel up in Oakland CA with good results. I removed the pump and brought to them. This took about a month and cost $2000

I am actually, not convinced that it is leaking at that cover plate. The leak seem to be coming from #2 of @sk66 drawing or about that area of the IP. As I said earlier the engine is running fine no issues with power, no fuel starvation, it idles fine. We just drove it from Calistoga to Clearlake though many up and down hills, no issues with power at all. I would like to understand how long can I drive it in these conditions.
I know the best thing to do is to get this IP rebuild, I need to find someone with experience rebuilding these pumps. Thx for your help.

Thx @Scott responded to this thread. Hopefully he will probably recommend somebody. Hopefully a shop in Los Angeles with experience can do it. How long did your pump leaks before it stopped working? I want to continue my trip if I can.

I noticed my pump leaking in the winter time while I was at home. I removed the pump immediately and had it rebuilt. Being that it is diesel fuel, and if the leak is small I would guess you could continue the trip?

Hi, if #2 should be leaky (or possibly #1 also) you should be able to finish your trip before you have them changed as long as there is only little loss of fuel and you are able to tolerate the possible damages to the environment. If you're lucky, it's only the #1 seal, that you could even change yourself on the road. It might be already helpful to open (only a bit) and re-tighten the screw several times if there is no replacement at hand.
