Hi. I’m the idiot that procrastinated on cutting a second key for my van. Now I’m paying the price. Keys were stolen couple weeks ago. I live in nyc and thought it would be easy to get a locksmith to unlock and cut me a new key for ignition. Anyone know of a locksmith in nyc that can help this idiot over here?
Thanks

Any locksmith should be able too. I've had keys cut locally (Ottawa, Canada) with no problems. It's not an only-available-in-Japan key.

If Delicas are anything like my old Montero or Starion, if you remove the lock cylinder on the passenger side it will have a number code that a locksmith can use to cut a new key. This is just a guess but I would image being from the same era they would do that same kind of thing for these.

For reference it cost me about $40 bucks to have it done. I removed the lock cylinder myself.

Thanks. I don’t have the key. I lost it - so most locksmiths tell me they don’t work on pre 95 cars
Like @speedyquest said, it should be pretty easy to do, most "real" locksmiths should be able to create a new key with no issue. Might have to make a lot of calls to find one that isn't just a keyboard jockey but actually knows how to re-key locks.... You can also ask used car dealers who they use as this is not an uncommon problem.

The reason people don't want to work on pre-95 cars is that keys sometimes need to be programmed and pre-95 cars don't have OBD2 ports, so need specialized tools. The Delica doesn't have a chip in the key, it's just a key and doesn't need to be programmed, just cut.

One other thing you could do is call a Mitsubishi dealer. Sometimes they can pull up key codes from the VIN and cut them that way. Could be expensive (e.g. $300) but it would work. If you can get into the car and get the key code, you might even be able to order one online.
