Noisy Valves/ Smoke

Hello All. I have a '96 L400 with Turbo Diesel. Still getting things sorted. When I am driving the van at warmer outdoor temps, the valves make a bunch of noise and it smokes. It gets better if I rev the engine a bit. When I detach the engine temp sensor, the problem improves. If I leave the temp sensor detached, the engine smokes at startup, unburned diesel. This sure seems like a timing issue. I have read a bit about the EGR delete, and wonder if that would help the issue? I replaced the temp sensor. Any ideas?

When was the last time your injectors were tested/cleaned? I’m having some similar symptoms although I haven’t messed with temp sensors yet. I was thinking about cleaning injectors and adjusting valves. I don’t see much mention of valve adjust on these. I agree timing is also suspect and I want to check that as well, but it’s a pretty involved process to that I’m guessing. I do have an egr delete, but I don’t think it has anything to do with either of our probs.

I don't think the temp sensor affects the EGR. But it can affect the timing if you have the electronically controlled injector pump. If you've replaced the sensor with a new OEM one, then the problem could be the wiring to it. If you used an aftermarket sensor; it could still be the sensor as it might not be truly to spec even if it is supposed to cross/match.

Not to hijack but discussion is useful anyway, but my pump is mechanical, so i doubt temp switch is relevant to fueling. But why does there seem to be two temp sensors on my engine?

My pump IS electronically controlled. I have noticed the valve noise and smoke is worst when it is warm out. The colder it gets the better it is. Sounds like maybe trying another new sensor…

We had a Series 2 in the other day. Smoking and knocking like Rodrigo Bell s L400 Series 2. We were able to see the egr valve open as soon as we started the engine. We found some wires to the solenoids rubbed bare under the fire wall. Repaired those and it still did it. Disconnecting the vacuum hose to the egr valve cleared up all the issues. As this vehicle is going up for sale I did not want to install an egr delete.

Granted a BB may have been sucked into the vacuum line going to the egr valve. Just saying.......
