Replacing Rack and Pinion

My 1991 Delica L300 Super Exceed has a leaky rack and pinion steering system happening. My mechanic (good friend) says it needs to be replaced. I found a lot of companies that SAY they have it to sell but I'm skeptical. What do I need to look for - specs, model number - to get the right one for my vehicle? Who is a trustworthy seller that I can depend on for the right part? Thanks in advance for any help I can get.

There is no aftermarket rack & pinion available.
You have 3 choices.
1. Sourcing used in good working order.
2. Rebuild it with original kit by professional
3. New to Mitsubishi Japan, super expensive

Good luck!

Okay! Thanks for the response. I guess I've got my work cut out for me.

The 4WD steering rack MB351852 is difficult to find, but the 2WD L300 power steering rack MB351502 is the same except with different rack ends. You can swap your 4WD rack ends onto the 2WD rack easily.

The 2WD steering rack is more common as it was fitted to RHD L300s and Hyundai H100 vans (millions sold in RHD markets until 2016), so there are plenty of aftermarket options still available overseas. Nothing sold on the US market had a compatible steering rack though.

Here's an aftermarket MB351502 listed on amazon.ca, this one on Aliexpress, and plenty listed on Alibaba etc like this one with good reviews and min. order of 1 piece.

This thread in the FAQ shows you (or your mechanic) how to rebuild your rack without needing special tools, and it has part numbers for the rebuild kit. Though if your rack is leaking it's likely the rack is rusted, which won't be cured by replacing the seals.

As for the steering rack, I never seen any reliable aftermarket parts so far. Similarity does not guarantee it is working well in L300 4WD upon considering absurd price and shipping cost from China.
