Spare Tire Cage Extension

My Delica came with a dry rotted spare tire so I replaced it with a 235/75r15 sized tire. When I tried to put it back in the spare tire cage it was too big (width wise) to reattach to the hook. So I decreased the PSI for the time being (I have a portable tire air compressor in the van) until I could get the tire to fit, but it's been bothering me knowing that I'm driving around with a half inflated spare tire.

I saw this post on the Delica.ca forum and so I decided to do this fix while I was installing the FTS4x4 hitch this weekend. It's pretty simple.

The original post basically screws a second hole lower on the back part of the rack that gives an extra 1/2" extension. I went with another option I saw using the flat metal pieces of U-bolts to extend it down.

What you'll need:

4x - 1.5" to 2" U-bolts (I went with 2", 1.5" is enough though) or any strong flat piece of metal with holes drilled on the ends.
2x - 3/32in x 3/4in Cotter Pins (my old ones looked pretty beat-up so I replaced them)
2x - stainless steel hex bolts/washers/luck nuts

1. Lower and remove spare tire.
2. Remove old cotter pins for back of spare tire cage. Remove bolts.
3. Attach doubled up flat metal brackets from u-bolts to the original hole of the spare tire cage holder with the stainless steel bolts.
4. Use original or replacement clevis and cotter pins to reattach the tire cage.

Now my tire easily fits fully inflated and with the hitch installed.
