Timing Chain Problems?

New engine noise developed at the end of a long road trip on my 95 L400 4m40. Initially, it sounded like it was coming from the dash board. It was a subtle, rhythmic sound, as if you were releasing air from an air compressor hose at an interval of 180-200 times per second. Very quiet initially. Over the course of about a month, the sound has declared itself to be consistent with the dreaded ‘chuff chuff’. Only happens under load (such as pulling a hill) and above about 2500 rpm. Noise abates if I let off the throttle, or when cruising on flat at low rpm. Naturally, I’m concerned about timing chain and/or tensioner issues.

However, timing chain and tensioners were redone within the last 80,000 kilometers.

I am curious if anyone has any input as to what else could be causing this sound if it’s not timing chain or tensioners. There are no other major symptoms, except for I’ve noticed more exhaust smell than I used to (could just be paranoia).

Thanks for any help in advance.

With a cold engine, remove the oil cap and stick your finger in there to touch the chain. If you can lift the chain a bit off the sprocket, then you might be correct on the chain tensioner or chain being stretched. Do you have a boost gauge?
