Ultimate Delica Van Guide

There are a few details in here that aren't quite right,

  • Late model vans didn't end in 93, they continued on being sold until 98 when they switched over to the 2nd face-lifted version in Japan (with the integrated bumper). This was then sold for 2 model years.
  • The bull bars weren't based on trim level, but generation (pre and post facelift). Mitsubishi did make two versions of auxiliary bars for the pre-facelift (one lower mount that makes it look like the face-lifted bumper, and one high mounted one that goes around the headlights). They did an auxiliary bumper for the face-lifted model as well that surrounds the headlights. These could be purchased through the Accessory catalog through any Mitsubishi dealer.
  • Jasper isn't a ski-themed model, but general outdoors.
  • Neither Jasper or Chamonix came with waterproof carpets. They came with an 'upgraded' interior which was simply upgraded over the GLX seats and carpeting.
    • Worth calling out both of these models had more insulation and could not be optioned out to have a sunroof or Crystal Lite roof.
  • All Delicas (cargo models excluded) switched to a 3-point seatbelt around 92/93. They also received airbags in 96.

Nicely written article. A great reference for the regular 'I'm thinking of getting one' posts on this board. As above, the L300 variant ran into 1999. The 1998 and 99's have driver and passenger airbags.
@natematos- I didn't know there was a 'roo bar option for the 98/99. Does anyone have a catalog picture of that? I'm-a have to find me one of them.

Nate's referring to the 1991 facelift (projector headlamps with grey plastic panel), not the '98 facelift (large bumper, molded "bullbar" with integral spotlights, air bags).

For reference, here's a complete catalog of 3-rd generation Delicas from 1989-1998: https://www.goo-net-exchange.com/catalog/MITSUBISHI__DELICA_STAR_WAGON/

Pretty good article @Crankshaft Culture. And of course I'm gonna point out one slight mistake too: the D:5 diesel has a proper Automatic, not a CVT. Though that took me a *lot* of digging to figure out when I was looking at buying one: Mitsubishi really don't like discussing what's inside the gearboxes, I had to start with the part numbers and work backwards.

That makes sense- facelift 1, not facelift 2. Thanks for the link GB, noting that for 98/99, Mitsu tapered to just the one model. No variants other than roof height and trans.

I would like to add that if you search world wide, the L300 style body was still being made for New Zealand and the Philippines up until at least 2007, maybe 2014. I think the Philippines are left hand steering. I wish I could import one, as cannibalize my 1987 into maybe a street legal one. Unfortunately there are not importers and I was ignored by the dealership in New Zealand.

@ecb015 Oh yeah, you could buy them everywhere. They were sold in Mexico as the Dodge 1000 until 2010. You can still buy the L300 brand new in Taiwan. In fact, it just got a facelift and new dashboard for 2020.

Hey Delica fans! I put together a piece for AutoWise called The Ultimate Mitsubishi Delica Van Guide. It covers some history bits, common options, and so on. Hopefully, you find it useful, especially if you're van-curious and interested in buying one!

Another review in the Philippines.

I was looking at this list and have a Question. Were L300 and L400 models produced simultaneously, with an overlap of several years? My L400 has a November 1994 production date for a 1995 model. Were L300s made thru 1998 also?

@kbrown934 L300 Delicas were made and sold in Japan until 1999. The L300 has been made and sold in other regions (Europe, Mexico, SE Asia, China, Korea) even to this very day where you can buy one new.

I looked for the Dodge 1000, but all I can find is a much larger old truck.
I love the one in Tiawan with the 2020 face lift.

Another article about the facelift.
