Replacement Engine

Hello everyone! My 1991 L300 4D56 was overheating for some reason, so I took it to the Delica mechanic in town sadly to find out that exhaust fumes were found in the cooling system. Most likely the reason is due to a blown head gasket or possibly a cracked cylinder head. The repair is estimated to be around 7,000 US. I've been looking at other options including doing the work myself. I was curious if the Hyundai D4BF would be easier and have a little more bang for my buck instead of just the replacing the gasket or cylinder head. I have not worked on car engines before but this situation has forced me to consider doing it myself because of the cost of labor. I'm dedicated to fixing my Delica and would really appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.

Sounds like you need to read some of these links!

But be aware that a scammer got a hold of one of the accounts for Hyundai Power and has stolen some of the people's money...

But, there's hope yet!

@Kellyn is looking at importing a metric ton of engines https://delicaforum.com/index.php?threads/importing-new-d4bf.1494/page-3#post-12614

$7k for a blown head gasket??? Even a head replacement should be a lot less than that IMO... find another mechanic.

But once you get up around that price the new D4BF makes a lot more sense; because the cost includes all new supporting systems as well.

I mean honestly this is the most important part. Anything over 1k for repairs on your current engine and you should be thinking about pulling the whole thing. An IP rebuild will be 1200. New injectors can be a few hundred. New turbo damn near 1k. Head gasket is 2k. OEM glow plus are 200. That timing belt job you were thinking about doing? Not your problem as you've now got 5-10 years before it's needed again.

With a new engine you've just solved all 'big' potential problems in one go. And while you're in there it's a great time to throw in a larger radiator, replace your engine mounts, stop worrying about your clutch if you've got a 5spd because the DB comes with a new one.

I think that's pushing it a bit, but I guess some depends on your particular time/ability/budget. I would say that if the repairs are near the cost of a new engine it starts to become an easy decision. Especially if the work already involves pulling/reinstalling the engine.
