Hi all, there seems to have been plenty of queries about whether or not the ring and pinion from a rear diff will fit a front diff head/carrier, but no definitive answer (that I have found) - has anyone ever actually tried and proven this swap?

I have pulled 4.875 LSDs and 4.625 LSDs from the rear axles of various vans and L200s, and the diff heads (pumpkins) all appear to be interchangeable, so I am hoping that MMC made life simple for themselves (and me) by using one basic design for everything in the range at that time, but I am prepared to be disappointed!

My local breaker's yard recently had a pair of 2wd L200s both with 4.22 diffs; if these would go in place of the 4.875s fitted to my [1992] truck, they'd give 100km/h (62mph) at 2,650 rpm instead of 3,060. Not a huge difference I agree, but better than nothing.

Currently, it is under-geared on the open road and yet under-powered on hills; I am hoping that the higher gears and a 4D56T in place of the n/a 4D56 will solve both issues.

So, to recap, anyone know for sure if a rear pinion will fit a front housing, and a rear ring gear fit a front (small?) carrier?
