Automatic transmission won’t stay in 4th gear

Yeah the o ring is possible. It is very hard to access without a lift. The original solonoid has one wire that goes to two to different plugs. I just spliced it to the single wire that was on the original.

Problem fixed. Ended up taking it in to a transmission shop in Spokane. Turns out the guy has worked on this transmission before. He said the pressure was running really high so he adjusted it down, changed the fluid and filter and the thing runs like a dream now.

G'day fellas,
Just found this page which is amazing as I'm having the same issue! My volvo solenoid (same one linked above) just arrived from USA, and its time for the install. Only thing I'm worried about it which wires to cut/splice. Does anyone have any photos or confirmation of which one needs splicing? Cheers, Adam

I believe, It ended up being an easy matchup. Splicing two wires together. Sorry I didn’t take pictures. Let me know if you have any issues. And I’ll try to help further.

Thanks Will, I went ahead with the install of the volvo solenoid, I can hear it click on and off so I guess I wired it up correctly and the switch/relay is all good too.

Didn't fix my problem unfortunately, I'm gonna take it to a transmission shop soon. Hopefully it's just something simple like yours was!

If you are near Spokane I know a guy can fix it no problem. Assuming it’s the same issue. I had trouble finding a transmission expert willing to work on it but this guy is from China with 40 years experience. He said it Was a pressure adjustment but I’m not sure
How exactly that’s done.

If you had told them it's the same transmission that's in many Volvos maybe they wouldn't have been so scared of it.

Could you give me the info for this guy? Sounds very similar to what’s been happening with my van.

Just so you know, the volvo solenoid didn't fix mine, but it was the OD solenoid. So I either have a wiring problem, or got a dodgy new solenoid. I ground out the channel between the solenoid holes to bypass it, works perfectly!

The guys name is Louis from Louis transmission in Spokane. He’s the shop owner.

I wish I Knew what he did to adjust it... you should ask him. I don’t even think he had to open it up.

I was able to shift into 4th but it was always downshift if I accelerated or had any tiny amount of load. Also shifting through low gears would require me to let off the gas for it to shift.

Hope you can get it fixed. Please post what you find out.

Is the shop you are referring to "Louie's Automotive and Transmission" in Spokane?
Wanted to add him to the our Delica owners/mechanics Map.

Yes that’s the guy.

FYI, my shifting issue Came back and so I used a dremal to grind a slot into the solonoid. After that I’ve had no issues! Wish I did it sooner. I talked to Louie later and he said he only adjusted the kickback cable which had pulled loose out of the sheath. He didn’t do anything on the transmission itself.

let me know if you need details on the solonoid modification

Thanks for the update. Luckily I haven't had any issues with transmission; knock on wood, keeping fingers crossed, .... :) But the thread is a good reference for the problem.

Seems Louie at least wasn't afraid to take a look at the transmission, which is more that can be said about other shops. I'll add him to the map.

Also did you happen to add yourself to the Delica Map? I see a dropped pin on Spokane for a 1993 Exceed but no username. If so could update it if you like.

No i haven’t added it but I just did!

Hi y’all!

Pinging this thread with a similar issue. For context, just had the engine tuned with EGT gauge installed. Recently had ATF changed with Lucas and took a trip to mammoth mountain (elevation 9,000).

On the incline had the overdrive off and was slowed to around 65 kmph with 1200 on the gauge. This is the max so I pulled off. When I got into the mountains there’s some trouble getting into 4th. RPMs are up past 3k maxing at 100 kmph, any acceleration pushes out black smoke and can’t get into 4th despite backing off. RPMs climb to under 4K. Don’t want to push it.

Need to head back today and wondering what I should do. Also wondering if it’s safe to drive back, don’t want to burn up the transmission… messaged the guys that did the tune up as well.

My first guess would be the OD solenoid on the left side of the transmission... you could look to see if the wiring is OK.It could also be the switch (the light and solenoid are separate functions).
It is safe to drive it, just don't push the RPM much beyond 3k for extended periods (and watch the EGT, but 1200 is quite conservative IMO).

Ended up cutting a groove into the solenoid as specified here: http://www.delica.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=95&t=17802 and I now have O/D again- just in case anyone runs into a similar issue. If you do this you won't be able to turn the O/D off with the switch.

Also wanted to say that my issue manifested intermittently: E.G. the van had trouble shifting into 4th at around 60km/s and eventually that became harder and harder until I could no longer get into 4th no matter what I tried. I think the mechanical aspect of the solenoid just gave out gradually.

I used to have same problem, my was temp sensor. Van won't shift in to O/D when it's cold in order to protect engine.
