What Did You Do for Your Van Today?

With a touch screen, how is the viewing angle when driving?
Visibility seems good to me. It's a little odd in that it has a knob to adjust volume by feel but it's not made for RHD, so it's all the way on the far side of the unit. I use voice controls whenever possible for navigation, etc.

I was eyeing that particular head unit totally independent of what was happening here. The thing that made it stand out was the knob having that click to it. I would love a rhd stereo that would work with our radio frequencies. I hate reaching so far to the left. But glad to hear visibility is good.

Installed a fire extinguisher in the back! Safety first, kids.

Much to my surprise, the plastic interior trim hugs the sheet metal in a few places on this corner and I was able to get some screws tapped in and snug. I did have to shim out the bottom of the bracket with a few washers but it's all tight and should withstand plenty of bouncing around.

Patched small leak in gas tank of my '92 Exceed (gas engine - 4G64, not diesel).

No photos, sorry, but I think not necessary for this repair.
Around Christmastime I started smelling gas when near the van (outside). I found gummy residue on the bottom of the steel shield plate under the rear gas tank. Gas was seeping out somehow. Here's how I fixed it, after running the van long enough to use up most of the gas that was in the tank.
1. Remove the steel shield that warps around the bottom of that tank (3 bolts). I thought I might have to hold the tank in place, but not necessary. Clean that plate while it is off the van.
2. Clean the gummy residue off the bottom of the gas tank. I used spray on de-greaser and a rag. I could then see where gas was seeping out of a small spot on the front lower edge. No idea what caused it. Once I cleaned it, the leak got bigger, I assume the pinhole leak was gummed up, and I cleaned out the gunk so the gas flow increased.
3. Drained the remaining gas from the tank.
4. Cleaned and sanded around the hole down to bare metal, using sandpaper. Cleaned the bare metal with lacquer thinner on a rag.
5. I used JBWeld Steel Stick, an adhesive epoxy putty, to fill the hole. I put on a pancake of SS about 1.5" diameter and about 1/8" thick. I pressed it in place as hard as I could with my hand. At first it didn't want to stick, but after holding it in place (with a piece of wax paper on my hand) for a minute or two it stuck. I held it in place for several minutes.
6. Let the epoxy set for a few hours. It seems like it bonded well to the tank.
7. Around the edges of the "pancake" I then smeared some sticky gasket material I had on hand. My theory is this will prevent water (ice) from getting into the joint where the putty meets the metal, in case that might weaken the bond.
8. I was going to use black spray paint to protect the rest of the bare metal where I had sanded off the paint. But the weather was cool, so I just smeared more of the gasket material on those small spots of bare metal.
9. Replace the metal outer shield.
10. I put about 2 gallons of gas in the tank and tried to start the car. No luck. Cranked and cranked on the starter. No luck. Waited an hour (in case it was flooded?) then cranked. I guess that draining the tank somehow disrupted the flow into the fuel pump. I added another 1-2 gallons at which point the car stared up. I think it took about 3-5 gallons to get to the point where it started.

This was about 1 week ago. No sign of leaking yet, so I hope that's done. If not, I think I will just screw a small sheet-metal screw into the leak hole, with some gasket goop or more Steel Stick between the screw head and the tank.

Swapped out my radio antenna setups converting both the Ham and CB to gutter mounts for better reception and upgrading the CB antenna.

Also comes with a remote. I put a metal plate on my remote and mounted a sticky magnet close to where my left hand rests.

I have it too, visibility perfect for me.

Dang man, meeeee too my head unit (hehe) has the volume all they waaay on the left....never thought a few inches would make such a dif. Hahahaha pun NOT intended.

Replaced the gas struts on my tailgate. One of the first pair I bought (new) had no pressure at all, but was replaced. Now with the 2 new struts it works great.

And replaced a burned out front turn signal bulb. Simple ('92 Exceed): remove the 2 screws holding the lens in place. Gently pull out the casing that holds the turn signal and another bulb. Separate the lens from the casing. Remove, replace the bulb (12V 21W in my case, found at local auto parts store). Reassemble.

Over the past two weeks I replaced upper ball joints, front shock absorbers, valve/rocker cover gasket, oil change, air filter changer, and vacuum pump oil line. Taking it in for the lower ball joints and an alignment this week. I also replaced my oil plug with a Fumoto plug although the long nipple won't work with my FTS skid plate unless I hook a hose to it. Will see how well it works on the next oil change I guess.

@CodyHennigan That's a nice setup, are the mounts stainless or aluminum? I've used these lighting stage clamps for mounting stuff to my ladder if you're ever looking for a different option, they hold a lot of weight.

Great suggestion! These are aluminum but I may switch to those if they seem to start wearing out.

Finally getting around to tuning the CB radio and ordering parts in preparation for summer trips. Trasharoo trash bag, Rotopax, the good stuff.

I'm on a roll with Delica II (Frosty):

Took out a ton of unnecessary wiring for various electronics that, apparently, the old owner took out before selling the car. Probably 100 feet of wires. Awesome.

Installed Sony XAV AX200 -- whew. See separate thread on that.

Put 12v charger outlet in plastic case down below gear shift/4x4 sticks

Put Apple CarPlay just below that in the same spot

Drilled out the metal plate where the cigarette lighter is. Installed a HDMI/USB outlet there.

Connected the HDMI/USB port to a HDMI to RCA converter behind glove box. Connected that, as well as the Sony headset to my second row after market Eneon display screen. Figured out how to use iphone playing videos to connect to HDMI to jump to RCA to go to screen in back, while using Bluetooth Audio feature to have sound come over stereo speakers.

Installed Trackmate GPS system (also have one in Dolly aka Delica I)

Figured out why aftermarket speaker installed on dash was not working. Disconnected wire. Reconnected. Hooray.

Started install of rear camera system. I was determined to install the camera in the bumper, not the liftgate. I was also determined to tap into the reverse lights in the left rear tail light. Success. But then when I was pulling the video/power wire through the hole I made into that area from under the car, I damaged the video wire. I also damaged part of the reverse wire going into the reverse bulb (it was dark, give me a break). So not done yet . . .a few setbacks. But I'll have that done in the next week.

Finally, I've had my chrome bumper stuck in Tokyo in our Tokyo office (to the escalating chagrin of my tidy Japanese co-workers) without a way to get it here economically. Nate hooked me up with a new connection in Japan right as I was about to give up. Now my bumper is getting loaded into a shipping container and will arrive in Dallas in May for a very good shipping price. Yahtzee!

Bought an Airfiilter, Oilfilter and Oil, went under it and looked for all the rust to determine what i need to grind down and get to asap and what can wait, its pretty solid so ill probly start with the bad bits in a few weeks.

Going into a mechanic just to have the fuel system looked over, the injection knocks pretty bad when i first start her up but as she warms she smooths.

Was going to buy a Valve Cover gasket today but the one from rightdriveparts is $42. Need to find a more affordable one, or just buy that one i guess.

I had a new A/C compressor put in today. Old one was seized and previous owner had cut the belt and removed the tensioner. Good news is that the R12 charge holds. Bad news is that I need a new tensioner and pulley, but I'm hopeful that the A/C actually will work again. Summer road trips!

The compressor is actually a Chinese one - I figured for $100 plus $40 shipping it is worth a try. Company was very easy to deal with. Ordered on Friday, got DHL shipping notice on Monday and was delivered Wednesday from Hong Kong. I can post info if there is interest.

Our belt is not attached and prev owner said AC was working but not very well when it let go. May need that info once i learn more from our diesel mechanic.

Prepped for the hailmageddon everyone keeps prophesying. Clutch slave cylinder is out, so I can't her into the garage. Timing. It's all down to timing.hail-no.jpg
