STILL NO PROGRESS, except learning a lot.

It appears my glow plugs are not functioning. Glow plug test with multimeter shows that nothing is functioning. I conclude that this is perhaps a reason that would keep my Deli from starting up. Does anyone have any advice?

Glow plugs were replaced.
Glow plug multi-meter test failure - no sign of glow plug function.
Everything connected and secured after replacing glow plugs and prior to multi-meter test.

The glow plugs are controlled by a module behind the driver's side pillar where the seatbelt retractror is. It can be accessed by removing the felt trim piece followed by the seat belt retractor. Once that's out of the way, remove the white plastic dust shield for the retractor and you'll then see the wiring harness to the module. There is a 10mm nut that secures it to the inside of the wall. Remove the nut and it should slide out. This baby likely needs to be re-built. There is a gentleman on the forum who offers a very affordable and high quality rebuild for them. Here is the link:

You will also need to test the relays for the glow plugs. It's easiest to remove the driver's seat to access these for testing purposes. Once the seat is out, remove the wingnut for the inspection cover and then locate the glow plugs on the firewall. I don't know the wires to apply power to at the moment but you can either check the wiring diagram or use a voltmeter upon turning the key and monitor which side of the relay is given power intermittently.

Cheers,
K

I forgot, did you try directly jumpering the battery to the glow plugs (ala step #31 in the "list") This will bypass controllers, relays, wiring shorts, and should allow the engine to start...

Next, did you measure the voltage at the relays (not in the list yet... :) But will be when we get the wiki)
  1. To check your glowplug relays, located under the driver seat in the air cleaner compartment, take your multimeter and connect the black probe to ground (anywhere on the body/engine with good ground will work)
  2. Then with the multimeter set to DC volts (20) measure with the red probe on the multimeter, each of the three pins with the car in "on" but not "starting".
  3. One pin (I think it's the left side) is voltage in, that should have voltage continously
  4. If no voltage measured, then see if your fusible links are blown for the glowplugs?
  5. One pin (Should be the center one) is the control signal from the controller. turn the car "off" and back "on" it should send a 12v signal to trip the relay.
  6. If no voltage measured on the middle pin, then check your glow plug controller
  7. If there is voltage, being sent to the middle pin, then check the other ping which is voltage out to the glowplugs. If there is no voltage on that pin, but there is voltage on the middle pin, then the relay is bad and should be replaced.
  8. If there is voltage on the voltage out to the glowplugs, but no voltage showing up at the glowplugs, then you likely have a broken wire or short in that wire.
Hope that helps.

UPDATE: Problem Solved!

Hello Delica Fam! I am extremely happy to post that I have gotten a solution to my problem with starting up my Delica L300. In short I had to take it to two auto mechanics for a fix. First place was my usual mechanic who put in place a temporary fix... temporary yes, because I almost got stranded in Mammoth, CA thinking I was journeying with a permanent one in place. The work that was completed on my van... some rewiring with the glow plug system that unfortunately did not come with a manual button to activate. Second place I took my van was at Euro Auto Service in Los Angeles, CA (check out www.euroautosvc.com). They offered a more permanent solution that I am very satisfied with. The solution: the manual push button system to activate the glow plugs. I was never able to wrap my mind around how to install one for myself as I am sure it is not a difficult thing to do. However, having Zaza and his peeps at his shop do the work, they did a full diagnosis of the problem prior to putting the system in place. The only downside was that my Deli sat on their lot for about 4 months. o_O

In short, once again, it was the glow plug relay... modulator system (I'm generalizing because I still am not an expert at this system). PROBLEM SOLVED! ;) I want to send a final thanks to @sck_nogas , @Growlerbearnz , @sk66 , @moroza , and @Kellyn , and of course everyone else who responded with an idea and interest in helping out. Thank you for your active participation in this thread and giving expert first hand advice and guidance.

Along with some good news... sometimes some good news comes with some sad news... unfortunately. At current I believe I am having alternator problems... I've done a little diagnosing of the problem and am hitting a wall . I got a Utah and Yosemite trip that I am planning for the next week and I am looking for some quick guidance that will hopefully lead to a solution or a road to the root of the problem. I hope I can get some help once again. Please check out the thread which I will be entitling as "Alternator Problems - L300". I will be posting the start of the thread today and shortly.

Much thanks in advance.
