Rear DELICA light fix

All the info in this thread is awesome. My 96 Active World seems to have the wiring harness and connector, but not the light housing and housing-side of the connector (I wonder if it was just removed or it never came with the Active Worlds). Anyone know where I can pick up a set or any alternative methods that do not use the light housing? The EL lights look sweet, but I am not certain I have the tools/skill to pull the center garnish apart.
Seems the illuminated trim wasn't installed after '94. Looks like you might still be able to get it new for ~ $650.00

Thanks for pointing that out @sk66 and providing that link! Why does $650 not feel too crazy for a nice clean lit up "DELICA" logo haha I'll have to put this mod on the back burner for now. Perhaps a DIY solution down the line after other more pressing items.

I followed the instructions and worked well although the LED bulb with its conical bulge did not seat like the original - I used longer screws to secure it with the OEM bracket. thoughts?

Now you've got me wondering if I have this because mine are like you describe, silver. Mine is a '94 Special Edition L300.
They're all silver, but only some have the lights (and fibre optics to get the light to the letters). Easy to tell though, just remove the internal tailgate card and look for the two large aluminium light housings.

Yeah, after further reading, I've come to that unfortunate realization.

Well, my rear latch is hanging a bit. Maybe I'll use that as justification to get under that panel, clean everything up a bit, and inspect for lights.

Mine is, sadly, unlit. Mods please move this if there's a non-lit thread for the "DELICA" tailgate moulding.

Need to rebuild mine/reattach properly to the tailgate. Moulding is in decent shape although the gasket is brittle, figured I'd use weatherstrip adhesive there. Can get the plastic clips. However, all but one of these metal brackets have let go.

Is this a job for some plastic welding? Never dabbled in it but willing to learn v. ponying up $500 some american for a new assy.

Fixed mine.

Had no idea the feature was on my van until this thread. Sure enough, both lights were in there, burned out from long ago. Swapped in the amazing super bright LED’s and presto, I’m glowing bright. Super cool feature!!

I tried a couple urethane adhesives (construction type) with no luck. What did work well is JB weld plastic bonder body panel adhesive. I would recommend you do not remove any of the old adhesive that is still well bonded to the lens. If you do, it may remove the silver lens coating as well (which will be visible from outside and looks bad).

What bulbs did you use? The original post is showing them not available. I just swapped out my tailgate after a wreck and the new light bar isn't working. Thanks!

I used clear silicone to seal the pieces together, and clamped it while it dried.

I then replaced the old brittle black gasket seal with some new door seal edge guard for $9

I also replaced the old crusty moisture barrier that had been taped up 300-400 times and put in new butyl sealant.

So, my tail gate is DONE!

Did the door seal edge guard material work out okay? Also, was 13' enough length to go all the way around the panel for the moisture barrier?

I've got sockets, but not the fiber optic parts. Gonna do the tape. Found it pretty cheap.

Anyone know how to source the connector that goes here? I'd like to wire my DELICA strip lighting into here using the actual connector.

The heat and pry method worked well!
View attachment 7438I got the letters free quite easily.
View attachment 7439and did not do too much damage (cracked a little cuz I did not heat long enough. )

But damn, that glue is everywhere!!! It’s sticky and a royal pain!!!

I now have spare fiber optic and lamps if anyone wants/needs. Let me know they are yours for price of shipping.

Have a quick look of the lit version before I re-assemble it in plastic (using clear silicone) and install it.

Did you trim your Electroluminescent Tape? Mine is 2" wide and I'm considering trimming it as it's a lot more replaceable than the Delica's panel as I've seen others trim that.
